Anyone with Head Gasket Recall done, any further problems ?
« on: September 10, 2009, 11:18:21 PM »

Hi,
I took my bike in to the dealer this evening to have the Recall head gaskets done after I discovered the dreaded leak

I was wondering of those who have had it done , how is the bike now? Any further issues with leaks or any other problems?

Thanks for your input

If you do a search, you'll find a bunch of info on this.  Mine's been done 5 times now.  I'm headed to get her tomorrow from the 5th time.  The 4rth or 3rd was the "recall".

Had mine done at 8000 miles on my 08 SEUC and I have 36,500 miles and no issues of leaks at all.

After the third head gasket and second base leak I wanted no more of this reacuring maintenence so changed out the motor. Now am dealing with the primary and comp bearings. Now am hearing this is a common problem as well. I am starting to think HD's reliability peaked in 2005.

Wow that really sucks, I'm suprised with Harley Davidson selling us out like that. I've owned 5 different Harley's over the years and have always taken pride in that but lately with all the nice looking , well built foreign bikes on the market they better get their act together because a lot of people are tired of the problems when we are investing so much money.

Man, did the Harley Dealership take care of it again? Or once they do the recall do they say " oh well we did our part"?

They did take care of mine. But from then on it's on me and I don't want to do head gaskets on a regular basis forever. So you either start over and build it better or drop in another motor. Even then you cross your fingers but at least not as tight. :huepfenlol2:

The head gaskets are a band-aid solution IMO for a liner loosening up in the barrel. the newest head gaskets are a Kevlar from what I am told. Not the proper way to fix the issue.

I just treat it as "maintenance".  I change the oil, oil filter, base gaskets and head gaskets every 5000 miles.  I'm glad I bought the extended warranty.  Fortunately I still have my old Wide Glide to ride when this one is in the shop.  Interesting to note, I had to have the base gaskets done on the Wide Glide early in it's life too (it's a 97).  Maybe Harley still hasn't gotten them right?????  You'd think in 10 years that they had upped the ante in technology a little.  I guess not.

EVO and TC apples and oranges, 88 and 96" VS 110" apples and oranges or should I mention the other yellow citrus fruit.

Warranty is great. It also means lots of down time at the dealer especially if you have to wait for back ordered parts. Yes I'm waiting, I wont trade bikes as I don't want to start the saga over at some point I keep thinking the issues will end. I know, dreaming right? If this were a car I would have been rid of it long ago.
