Oil Consumption excessive ?
« on: September 13, 2009, 01:58:20 PM »

Hi all
Just returned from a trip through France ,Germany & day trip to Innsbruck Austria 11 days excellent !
Question is, bike ran fine SEUCSE3 but when i checked the oil on my return the dipstick was dry  !! it took 2 full Qt bottles to bring the level back to where it was before i left i covered 2160m during the trip. Probably rode a little harder than usual as i was tail (sweeper) for the trip i reckon this this is too much your input valued.

Two quarts of oil in less than 1400 miles is significant consumption.  Whether it be through guides or the bottom end it is surprising you're not seeing a little smoke.

Bike shows no leaks though the rear cylinder has been changed due to leaks 3500 miles ago.

Really wasn't concerned about a leak.  That much oil would cause a hell of a mess if you were leaking.  It'd be terribly obvious.  Even though I misread your original remarks as km rather than miles it's still consdirably too much oil consumption.  Watch to see if you're puffing blue-ish smoke when you start the engine and when under acceleration.  If so more likely you're sucking oil through the valve guides.  If otherwise more likely through the bottom end or a combination.

1/2 qt might be ok, your loseing a bunch of oil somewhere, a large quantity like that should leave some kind of trail, have you looked at your spark plugs, if its coming through the valve guides there should be carbon residue on your plugs.

Update on excessive oil consumption, the bike is torn down again and the front cylinder has been burning oil, honing pattern deeper and more irregular than the rear cylinder totally different colours on the valves, plugs & heads . The front jug is original & has covered 9700 ish miles which will now be replaced with new plus rings & re seat the valves the rear jug is the 2nd replacement but looks ok this previously was always the faulty party. I hope this time will fix the problem for good ?

i really dont like replacing parts on one cylinder after so many miles, in an ideal world i would prefer to have both cylinders of identical age wear.  Hope u get sorted!
