The new FLHTK motor is a standard 96" motor with the stage 1 kit (bigger bore barrels and pistons) and addition of ACR's in the heads. The older 103 SE motor had different cams and heads I believe. Looking at the specs, I also see a little different bore and stroke......just minor.
Maybe someone with a better memory can fill in the gaps on the older 103 SE??

The SE103 Stage 1 kit (same as CVO 103) for the '06 and earlier models included the big bore cylinders and pistons, the stroker crank, hemi cylinder heads, SE253 cams, higher flow air cleaner, and SE clutch spring.

The SE103 Stage 1 kit for the '07 and later models includes big bore cylinders and pistons, high flow air cleaner, and the SE clutch spring.  The '07 and later engines don't require a stroker crank, since all '07 and later Big Twins have the longer stroke stock.  (No heads)

The SE103 Stage II kit for the '07 and later models includes the cylinder and pistons, high flow air cleaner, SE clutch spring, and SE255 cams.  (No heads)

For all intents and purposes, the 103 Stage 1 kit for the current model bikes is the same thing that used to be the 95 kit for a TC88, cylinders and pistons.

Jerry, why don't the kits now not include the heads? Are heads the same on the Limited 103 today as the earlier 103"s?

There's a plastic clip on the TB support behind the air cleaner. The wires have a connector on there that goes to each head, and is clipped to the plastic thingie. Wires go between the heads, under the valve covers, at least on mine they do.
There is also a reference in the owner's manual about them, pg. 146
Hope this helps.

Nope, the heads on the current model ('07 and later) kits and the LTD are the TC96 heads, not the CVO hemi heads.  The only kit I know of for current models that comes with heads is the 110 kit, or the 103 Stage IV kit which isn't street legal.

So would i be correct to think that the new 103 LTD motor would be a good reliable unit without the issues that many of us are or have faced with the 110.

I had a 06 CVO with the 103, as stated the one your talking about is a tad bit different.

I would prefer the 103 I had, over the 110 I have.

I think the 103 will be cooler then the 110... as far as reliability.........you will have a good warranty with the purchase.

Run it, ask more questions, make you own decisions on what you would like to improve, ask some more questions, make your decision on what mods you need and prefer.

Then just do it.

I'm not convinced! A new 96, 103 and 110 are all basically the same motor. Same bottom ends with 3 different bore sizes. The 110 uses different cams and larger TB's with CVO 110 heads. Not sure what cams or TB are in the 103, if they're the same as the 96 or not. But the inherent motor major assembly is basically the same. 96's have had similar failures as the 110. We just don't hear about it that much here is all! Of course the bigger you go and the more power you make, which exerts more forces on the components. That alone might be the only way the smaller motors are any more reliable than the 110! ;)

The 103 you had IS NOT THE SAME 103 AS IS AVAILABLE TODAY! Just bear that in mind and read my previous reply. These new motors are all basically the same! ;)
