break in with syn or dino??
« on: December 07, 2005, 08:01:21 PM »

just got my 95" build back. Too cold to ride up here in Canada besides I'd have to shovel the driveway to get out. Did the original break in with dino oil in here then switched to syn3. Ok there's syn3 in her now should I change back to dino for the break in or just leave it in there??

Hankster;
Welcome to the site! As 06Ultra stated the syn oil will work just fine [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]

Alot of guys say to put the dino in for the break in. syn is too slippery for the rings to get a good seating. I don't know for sure that's the reason for the post. I know the se ultra glide shipps with it from the factory though.

        Don't feal alone, I got up to go to work at 10:00 PM and there was 12" of the white stuff in my driveway here in Chicago.. do you have any idea what's it's like backing up 60 feet to the street in a 04 Lightning??  [smiley=oops.gif] thank God i bought an old used two stroke snow blower this summer at a gaurage sale that the guy said it use to run for $10.. well I took it home and replaced the spark plug and with one pull BAM!! It cleaned the intire drive way they cost $400 at ACE boy did I get a deal it sure paid for it's self last night.

About your new build, it should be just fine with that syn3 till spring.. I use Amsoil and there oil filter on my 00 Deuce with a 116'' motor I only change my oil once a summer unless I put 5k miles on it then I would change it again, I get it from a dealer over for $3.55 and the filter is $6.00 been doing it since after I broke it in on both builds, have a dood one [smiley=drink.gif]

Hankster,

My last 3 bikes have come with Syn in them.   I had them switched out to Dino for the 50 mile break in and then the first 1000.  I have not converted any of them back till 5000 miles to synthetics.   Generally its been amsoil or mobil1.

In retrospect, I have never really tried comparing them to see if there was a difference in the long run, but I have never had an issue using this methodology, so for me I will stick with it until it runs me awry.

Would not use synthetic to break in a motor.  Red line states on the bottle not to use untill you have 5,000miles on the motor.  Just 1 opion am sure you will get a lot of different opions good luck.

I did ask the dealer and mentioned my concerns. The answer was " don't think it makes any difference" the se comes shipped with it. It must be ok. Think I will drain it out and put dino in for the breakin..

The reason it's ok to use the HD synt, oil for brake in and always is because it' not 100% synt, it's the same that Ford uses on my 04 lightning it says it's a synt, BLEND! so I would just keep using HD synt3, oil untill the rings have seated then switch if you like.

 That's why Red Line tell's you NOT to use there oil for brake in, so does Amsoil because it's 100% synt, Mobil1 is also a good choice all I know is when I hammered my 95'' to death (first build) for 2 years and when I took it apart it looked like I just put it togeather, the most important thing is make sure the rings have seated, remember over heating to were it starts pinging can distroy a motor in a very short time and with high performance motors it can happen even faster if not kept under control, make sure you have good oil presure all the way up to your rockers, when I built my 116'' TC I put in an oil cooler, a fueling oil pump, roller rockers,a cooling fan, corect timming,Amsoil and there oil filter. on very hot day (95) my oil tempture stays at 210 after a full day of riding hard,

 Just my 2 cents

One of my friends built his first 95'' and this is what we did to brake it in at first start up, we made sure nothing was making any strange noise and after a little tweeking of the carb we let it get to just above normal running temp,and turned it off, then when the cyl. cooled down to the right heat temp, we fired it up again and did this 5 times ..... it's called a heated break in, and after he took it out and put 50 miles on it at up and down speeds then came back and changed the oil and filter and one jet and added a little more timming and that was it, one other thing, we used those Andrews 6HG cams with 10.5 compression ..... all I can say is when you crack the stick from 0 to 5500 it pulls like fright train  [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif]

I've used a theory that has worked well over the past few years.  Any "built engine" gets Dino for the breakin.  An HD stocker gets whatever oil that came in it for the first 100 miles and then Amsoil or Mobil 1.  Really don't know if it makes any technical sense, but I have always believed that the tighter tolerances of the "built" engine require a little extra care on the breakin.  (Might be that the cost of the built engine makes me real cautious.)
