09 cvo serg exhaust question
« on: September 19, 2009, 02:45:11 AM »

I bought an extra head pipe to pull the cat out of so it would be immediately avaiable to install on my bike when i get the original pipe off.  I'm a little confused about the clamp things that actually bolt to the head.  It appears on my bike in stock form that they compress and hold the pipe on.   But these clamps are not on the pipe i want to install.  do i use the old ones to hold the new pipes on?

Hi, I just changed out my cat header to non cat on my 09 SEUC.  I think the parts you are talking about are the retainer ring and exhaust flange. The exhaust flange goes on first, then the retainer ring ( the retainer rings are cheap I replaced mine) but the exhaust flange off your bike of course can be reused.( the side with the recess goes towards the engine to hold the retainer ring ) I was going to reuse my retainer rings, but they looked a little warped. After you slide the exhaust flanges over the end of the pipe then comes retainer ring. There is a small collar they have to slip over.(they tend to want to slide down during installation so I put a couple of layers of blue masking tape to hold them in place which I removed with tweezers after I was done this helped out a lot ) The exhaust flanges press up against the retainer rings and this is what holds your pipes tight up into the exhaust gasket when you tighten your exhaust flange. If you replace your exhaust gaskets (and you should ) clean the rim of the port where the gasket goes and lubricate it and the new gasket. I used some spray I had with teflon in it. It seemed to help the gasket slip in easier. Putting them in takes patience because they are woven metal and tend to buckle if you try to force them. ( buy two sets before you start so that if you mess one up you will not have to run back) You will also need an 7/8 inch O2 sensor removal socket so you can properly torque down your O2 sensors in your new head pipe.(This can be done with the pipe off the bike because they unplug from the wiring harness). You might want to replace the crush washers for the O2 sensors (part no. 27714-06). One of the guys on the site said he did not feel it was necessary and I tend to agree with him to a point. The old washers are hard to get off (I put my O2sensors in a vice and coaxed the washers  off gently with a small screwdriver and a pair of pliers. When reinstalling the sensors put antisieze on the threads.  Take your time and maybe get a second set of hands to help you in stall the pipe. I did and it went pretty easy. CAHDBIKER
