Looking for instructions to download dealer database.
« on: September 20, 2009, 04:01:03 AM »

For Zumo 550, I've located a site with downloads, but I can't figure out what to do with it.  Does anyone know how to load the database or dealers?

You need to download POI Loader, see link the web site also has instructions.

It is easy just download the POI into a folder, connect the Zumo to your computer using the USB cable supplied and run POI Loader and follow the directions.

One other note when loading POI's... If you want to load multiple POI files you will have to put them all in a folder together and load them at the same time. For instance if you want to load H-D Dealers, Starbuck locations, etc, etc, put them all in one folder and point the POI Loader to that folder to load. When they are loaded to the Zumo they are loaded as one file (but will show all the POI's separately). If you try to load one set (H-D Dealers), then try to load the next set (Starbucks, etc, etc) separately then it will overwrite the previous file.

While the Garmin is hooked up to the computer, you can browse to the Garmin/POI folder and change the name of the POI file to something like harleydavidson.gpx(I think it's a gpx file).  Then you can load Mcdonalds, change the name to Mcdonalds.gpx, than Starbucks, etc.

I just saved the POI files to the same folder on my computer and when I made the transfer to the GPS unit, they come up named properly...H-D Dealers, Walmart.  I didn't have to change the names.

This is true as long as you upload all POI's at the same time.  If you want to upload some more tomorrow, you either have to rename the file, or upload all of them again.

After what I saw today when I went through this, it appeared that you would simply choose the option to delete all your custom POI's, and then load the entire folder again, including any additional files you put in that folder.  I guess that's what you meant by uploading them all again.  That seems pretty simple, since it took the upload immediately.

I live in France but I've bought my Zumo 550 (Roadtech) in USA at a HD dealer (I know, some of you will tell me that it has been more expensive compare to the standard, but I have got a good price.

One particularity of the HD Zumo is to come stock with the HD dealers database, not as a POI file but as a "gmapoem.img", and to appear directly on the first screen level of the Zumo; See joint picture.

Here is the issue : There is nobody neither at Harley nor at Garmin US (specific HD product department) to tell me where is the last release of this database !! javascript:void(0);

Hereafter the answer from Garmin to my request after 2 mail sent, as recommmended by the HD site, to "harley-davidson@garmin.com"

"Thank you for contacting Garmin International. I would be happy to assist you.

This POI file is something built by or for Harley.  We recommend doing a Google search on POI files for Harley dealerships.  This should give different websites that have the POI file already created and updated.

I don't believe that the specialist support for HD products at Garmin could make such an answer, as this database is a part of the price of the Roadtech Zumo.
More of that I've tried this Google research but don't found this kind of gmapoem.img folder wich certainly is only available at Garmin.

Is anybody can help me ? (my actual release of this folder is 2,01)

Thank you

That particular database that is exclusive to the H-D Roadtech is only in those. The POI's of the dealers that most of us are using on the Garmin Zumo's will show up as "Extra's/Custom POI's". You can add these POI's but they will not update or override the existing dealer file you will end up having what came w/the Roadtech (in the icon you pictured above), and the extra set that you install. To my knowledge there is not an update for the proprietary dealer file that came preloaded.

That is yet another reason to purchase the Garmin unit rather than the one from Harley.  The database of dealers that I downloaded shows the monthly updates that are done to keep the information current.  Since they are free downloads, it's no big deal to occasionally update the POI's.  I couldn't care if the Harley unit has it on the main page or not.  It only take a few seconds to get to it in "Extras".  But, as long as you are still able to download the database and put it in Extras, you will have 2 places to check the info and I don't see that as being any big deal at all.  So it doesn't really matter which one you buy, you can still do the same thing with either one, except I can't get to the dealer list on the main page.

OK guys, Thanks all for your answers.

It seems that there is no way to update this "house-made" dealers database, that seems to be unbelievable but that's it !!!

And in the same register how to update maps and dealer database on the Harman kardon GPS wich comes stock with our ultra's CVO ?

Hi guys,

I've finally just found yesterday the last release of the HD Dealer databse for Road Tech Zumo 550 on the Garmin site support (Even the HD specialist support in Garmin were unaware of his existence ?!!! See the answer above).

Unfortunately to implement the update you have to run Windows and my Device is linked to ....... a Mac ! >:(

I've written one more time to the support yesterday but I'm not optimist.

Here is the link for the V3.0 update for those of you who run Windows only :
