What to do while engine is apart??

Dropped her off at the dealer for a problem with the runout of the flywheel.  They have to split the case etc... While she is apart,  is there anything worthwhile that I should do to her?  It would save alot of the labor doing it now...  Esp if its upgrading to better parts than harley,  as I would only have to pay the difference in the parts..

oh yea,  08 SERK w/ 6k miles... (thank you MoCo!)

Too bad you can't fix the crank VS just get a new HD crank that is just as weak as the previous part.

 Yea send the new crank out and have it trued balanced and welded,And put the timken bearing in.

Humor me as I am as far away from being a mechanic as Sarah Palin is to president :)

They told me the flywheel and rods would have to be replaced at least... How does the crank fit into this?

Different terms for the same assembly. Same parts. The wheels on the sides are pressed fit to the crank pin and the wheel(s) can slip which causes runout and the problem you likely experienced.

crank - is same as wheels and rods - comes as a assembly

true and weld - solves the problem of runout - increases durability

timken bearings - more heavy duty than the roller - its what was used for a LONG time - hd make a conversion kit - increases durablity costs more than roller on a stock engine weld and true is a really good idea - timken is optional.

the stock crank after its trued and welded is just fine, but there is a SE version that is a better part - same process applies & again its a more expensive part & is in the hd catalog. [the se crank is fully machined , looks like it has billet wheels. ]

welding a stock or se crank is totally adequate unless you are going huge like 124" then you really need to spend time with a builder and fully understand what you are doing. if you dont understand what you are doing, you need to be VERY careful what you ask for.

if you ask for max power - that will be a engine that makes LOTS of power at about a hundred mph plus - but will run rather poorly below 50mph.

you need to ask your builder for more power at specific speeds.. say more power from stop sign to 80 mph for example will yield a completely different configuration from a max hp at 100+mph engine - so be careful what you ask for.

also pay close attention about warranty issues - modifying the engine changes the warranty from a factory hd warranty to a dealer supplied warranty - NOT the same thing.
