96 upgrade
« on: September 21, 2009, 01:45:12 PM »

I have 35,000 miles on my 08 Ultra Classic and it is running great.  I was wondering if it was worth the effort to upgrade to the standard 103 kit with 255 cams but will use stock heads?  Will I need to put compression relief valves in to prevent hot starts. Will I have to Dyno the engine or is their a chip upgrade from the dealer? Currently using Fuel Pak for Hi Flow and SE Mufflers.

Just install the SE Stage II kit and their mufflers and download. I would put in compression releases, manual valves, just for hot starts. Not a necessity but will help starter life considerably.

I would go with manual compression releases.  And yes, there is a download that goes with the Stage II kit (at additional charge of approximately $150).

I did this to my 2010 Ultra 300 miles after I bought it. No compression releases at all and I have not had any problems starting hot or cold. I have 2600 miles on it now. Same cams. Used same heads. Just bolt on kit with the 255 cams. It is currently in for Dyno as it was part of the package I already paid for. Hopefully this will get the VE and AFR in line and I can adjust from there with my super tuner as it is still just a tad too hot for my liking. I love the super tuner program.

Forgo the 103 part and just do the cams.
Then get a quality tune with a TTS MT by a competent tuner...you'll be surprised at the results.

If you feel the need to go big bore, go with a 107 (106.5) drop on.
Get the deck height corrected, set up proper squish, and maybe some headwork.
To many variables with the bolt on SE 103 kit IMO.

Either way, get a good "tune"...beware of the "tooners" out there.

A friend of mine did the cam and fuel pac routine and can barely feel any difference on his 96" engine. Go with the 103 solution.

If he feels no performance improvements with the SE255 cams in his 96" blame it on the fuel pack. Even with modest performance modifications these motors require significant timing adjustments to realize their performance potential, something you cannot adjust with the FuelPak.  These cams are capable of delivering 100 lb/ft TQ with a proper tune. http://harleytechtalk.org/htt/index.php/topic,12133.0.html .

My friend installed the 255s from my SERG3 in his 96" '09 RG along with Rinehart slip-ons, S&S tuned induction breather kit, and TTS MasterTune. I created a hybrid base map from two different calibrations and the seat-of-the-pants results are significant. Timing adjustments were critical to the performance. Expect even more improvements if he'll quit riding long enough for us to get it on the dyno.  :2vrolijk_21:
