110 questions for the experts
« on: September 22, 2009, 02:37:17 PM »

I have an 09 Fat Bob 110 and I am going to take it in for the oil seepage around the rear cylinder this fall. It also burns about a quart of oil in 1000 miles. My thoughts were to get the pistons and cylinders from the dealer and have them checked at a different shop for the piston to wall clearance and to see if the cylinders are warped. Am I out of line when I ask to do this?

I may want to do a few mild mods while it is apart. Any suggestions? Up the compression to 10:1 maybe?

Seems a little excessive......your bike is under warranty, what does your dealer say about oil usage??

What are your goals for this bike? What is your budget? You need to think about that first before you take the plunge!
Make sure you will be happy in the future, and not want to tear it apart right away after you do the mods. Common mistake!! LOL
Check some of the vendors here, most are very reputable, and will help you in your decisions. Give 'em a call.

Hope this helps a bit.

This can be a very slippery slope to navagate.

I started out this exact same way and 5K later I have a reliable motor but at what cost?

Once you get on this train it is impossible to get off!

There are issues with the 110, many of which are carry overs from the 96". In addition they have heads that have guide fit issues and bad seals in some versions, plus ACR isssues. The new 110" barrels could have the same issues the original OEM part had, liners moving. This is what takes out head gaskets and even the trussed up Kevlar version is not immune. And the crank...
So I guess there are many issues to deal with just to get on level ground then added performance can be considered. A very reliabe strong running 110 can be built, just not sure that can be done with the MOCO being the adult supervision / constraint. Let us know how it works out and good luck.

I here ya :).  But I bought the bike and now am stuck with it!!! It is really not that bad. It is just the fact that a $26,000 bike burns a quart of oil in 1000 miles kind of burns my ass at times. My bud bought an 09 cvo springer and put on a big radius pipe and a canned map when he bought it and there are no oil burning issues with his. I was thinking that do to the heat issues for the first 1000 miles before I got it tuned I thought it may have affected the valve seals or the jugs and pistons. Maybe a little warpage and blowby.

I guess I am thinking about it this way: 1000 miles at 44 miles per gallon=22.72 gallons multiplied by 128 ounces that are in a gallon= 2908 oz of gas. Divide the 2908 oz of gas by the 32 oz of oil it burned and you get a ratio of 91:1. The evinrude E-tech burns less oil at 100:1 and that is a 2 cycle.

                                                     Get my point!!! >:(
See now its pissin me off again.

Just trying to figure out why it is burning so much oil. I really dont want to tear into the motor because it does run great for the 5000 miles I have on it now but there are issues that concern me. Am I out of line asking for my jugs and pistons so I can take them to a shop that has the proper tools to take measurements?

Have them check the valve guides and seals.  It is very common for valve stem seals to cause excessive oil burning.  New seals are cheap, so if you are burning oil they should be replaced anyway while the heads are off.

Not at all but I am not sure you can find any evidence of the problem with measurements and visual inspections. The liners move. I am not convinced they have that licked. We have zero problems like this with the SE 113 cylinders, or the 88/95/96" barrels.
In the 09 MY they changed the touring heads and the guides are longer (and right in the airflow path), tighter fit in the heads and they have improved seals on all of them.
If your heads happen to have the old K-line type seals change them. At the same time check the guide to stem clearance. I have yet to find one I would accept, they are too loose for my liking right from the inception, but those are just my standards.

As i have said in another thread this is the #3 rear jug fitted oil leaking at the base in the first 2 jugs total miles 9400 i guess if it burns the oil out it cant leak out ! 8)

Update. the dealer did a leakdown test and said it was less than 10%. They changed the oil and told me not to add any more oil and to bring it in at a 1000miles for them to check.weather here has been cold and rainy and only have 200 miles on it . The oil consumption on the last 1000 miles before I took it in was less. Maybe it is starting to break in??
