Deer whistles
« on: September 23, 2009, 09:51:56 PM »

I had a very very close call last weekend with a deer.  Have any of you mounted deer whistles on your bikes?  If so, where do you put them?  I would love to see pics.

I wonder if they would work for moose?  I tagged a moose last winter, totaling the car and scared the *%*# out of me.  With the exception of the head and one front leg, the entire moose came through the windshield into the front seat.  If they would work I'd spend the $'s and put a box of them on the other vehicles and the SEUC.

When I whistle, all the deer come up looking for a handout...  When I come up my road, they run along beside me and dart back and forth across the road in front of me... Have yet to see any proof of any device that keeps them from running out in front of you... I've just missed a bunch of them on the bike, but one nailed my truck really good on the front fender and door...

Kuryakyn also sells the electronic XP3Hornet..   For people that have done the install, did you wire direct to the key or did you wire in an on/off toggle switch??  The only reason I could see turning it off is if you had animals of your own??  Help me out here.

Kuryakyn also recommends mounting it to your fork down tube with one of their "P-clamps"..

Don't waste your money... or even worse; trust a device that is suppossed to repell deer.

The bottom line is this:
If you see one slow down and be ready to stop... Once you pass their safety zone, they will most likely dart in front of you... Nothing worse than dying because you trust bogus products..

I agree, living in Iowa all my life, where there are arguably more deer then people.  These things are a scam.  They don't work!!  Only thing that works is changing your riding habits later in the year as it gets darker sooner as the deer rut and the deer herd up for the winter.  Ride slower, run your brights as much as possible, and try to be off the road after dark.

I was looking this up last month or so - I pass a LOT of deer here on my ride in, main reason I have not been going the route that cuts through the training areas of Quantico until the rut is over - its a tough call the main road Route 610 is almost as hazardous with commuting idiots.

I will see well over 30 - 40 deer some rides in, they are like fleas here.  (Spurring a new interest in killing them with a bow which seems to have consumed me lately).

Everything I found said the whistles are useless.

I am putting an HID in the SERK (did the KLR and Truck so far) and hoping my Howards scare the crap out of them if need be - and they head INTO the woods not into me.  I have had a close call with one in NC, and that was close enough.

If they worked, they would be installed on every vehicle in Wisconsin.  :rifle:
