Engine oil
« on: September 23, 2009, 10:35:50 PM »

While browsing in my 2009 Service manuel for touring models  I noticed that on page 1-10, table 1-5, under the catagory of engine lubrication it makes no mention of SYN3 or any other synthetic type oil.  It just gives four recommendations based on temperature. 1. H-D Multigrade SAE  10w40 HD360 for ambient temp below 40 degrees, 2. H-D Multigrade SAE 20W50 HD360 for ambient temp above 40 degrees, 3. H-D Regular Heavy SAE 50 HD 360 for above 60 degrees, 4. H-D Extra Heavy SAE 60 HD 360 for above 80 degrees. I am using Redline 20-60 in my 09 SEUC and I am okay with that. But I would like to get some feedback from anyone who could explain the HD recommendation. ( my owners manuel recommends these same oils, but also recommends SYN3 20-50 for temps above 40 degrees )Thanks in advance CAHDBIKER

Same thing with the Softail 2009 service manual, so I referred to my FXSTSSE3 CVO supplemental service manual and on page 1.1 first sentence states, The engine of this model is initially filled with Screamin' Eagle SYN3 synthetic motorcycle lubricant. If oil needs to be added to the engine to bring the fill level to FULL on the dipstick and SYN3 is not available the first choice would be, and refers to the chart 1.1 and is the same as you stated. So having a CVO not a stock Softail model, they must come with the regular HD oils stock. you may want to invest in a supplemental service manual correct to your model, mine covers a ton of different things and was really needed for even routine maintenance..  Cost for the supplemental was $69.99 and took 2 weeks to get but was well worth it. Good luck!!

don't get hung up on what HD recommends for oil. branch out, learn more about it, many more options.

I'm with you on the Redline.  I'm running it in all three holes.  Started with the Syn 3, then Mobil 1 V Twin and finally settled on the Redline 20W60 for the engine.  Couldn't be happier (other than the cost)! ;)

I have heard this a lot. My question is why are you happier? What does other oils do to make your bike run better? Also is there an chart that compairs all oils? I can not find any that is not put out by some oil company.

My 07 SERK came with the SE SYN3 oil, changed to HD oil, then to Mobil1, Have just changed to Redline, The Shockproof for tranny i'm sold on its been in for about 600 miles or so, makes tranny shift smoother and quitier, the 20w60 motor oil and the primary oil not sure yet only have about a hundred or so miles on it, The reason i'm not sure is i now have a whinning noise that started as soon as i changed over to Redline and i'm not sure where its coming from, the motor or the primary. :nixweiss:

Thanks for the imput guys. I am also using Redline in all three holes. However, I agree it is important to look beyond what is in the Harley Service Manuel. Thanks for the imput, and I am going to buy the CVO service manuel supplement. The books are pricey. By the time you get the service manuel, supplement, the parts manuel, supplement you are looking at way over $200.00. Ride Safe.CAHDBIKER

What I liked about the Redline is the bike seems to run a little cooler,  and the transmission doesn't "clunk" as badly as it did before.  Couldn't say that it runs any better.  I don't know of any particular chart that provides a realistic comparison between one oil and another.  I guess you'd have to rely on what a manufacturer claims.  You might access the Redline website and read some of the information provided and then make your own determination if it will suit your needs.  Now as to why I couldn't be happier, that is an easy one - because I'm riding my CVO and it's paid for! :D

Now that's a topic to hash out again ... Redline vs Amsoil in the tranny.... I still have the whinning in 5th gear using the Syn3 and Amsoil. Rather than doing another on my own again, will the Redline Shocker have an effect in 5th gear? Takers?

Switched early on to Redline heavy. Whine in 5th disappeared almost completely and shifting much, much better. Have heard much about Spectra for the tranny also.

Redline Heavy Shockproof in the tranny is my choice.  MTL in the Primary and 20/60 in the crankcase.  The shockproof is pink, it foams, and gets everywhere, and it won't settle off the gears.  Most lubes after a heat cycle, settle to the bottom of the pan.  Not the Heavy Shockproof, it stays put, and it doesn't break down.  Even when you drain it (and it takes forever), solvents or breakclean won't wash it out of the drain pan.  Smooth shifting, and quiet.  Enough said.
