Extreme engine/oil heat after 10 min stop-go
« on: September 24, 2009, 03:38:55 AM »

Hello to all,

my SERG 09 had an extreme oil temp -310f- after 10 minutes stop and go at Faakersee. The engine sounds horrible.
I had to turn it off a coulple of times. Without some more rpm-1100-1200- the engine stopped by itself. :(
Does anyone had this problem too?
Thanks in advance for you help!

One thing definitely different about this 09 from my 06 is that it doesnt like stop-n-go for very long.  It would take my 06 3 times the amount of stop lights to heat up to 230+° but with this 09 I can literally watch the oil temp move within minutes.
And this is even with the HB, D&D, SEST, and Dyno tuned.    Oil temps are great as long as the air is moving but she gets hot quick in town.

ThomasK, something is wrong, what did you do recently, any tuning?

Are you sure you're not confusing the "horrible sound" for the designed mode of the engine when it overheats? Are you aware that when the engine gets overly hot in idle, the ecu cuts out fuel and spark to one of the cylinders, essentially leaving only one cylinder running. When this happens the engine will be off-balance and sound horrible but it will run in this mode for quite awhile. Once you hit the throttle or the engine cools down, the 2nd cylinder will fire back up. This "hot" mode is described in your owners manual.

This is not normal, does your 2010 react the same?
I would make a trip to your dealer and have them correct that issue.
We have warm temps here also (104F yesterday!) and the engine does not quit.

@HOGMIKE

i dont have my 2010 FLHXSE yet. Its ordered. Hope it doesnt get as hot as my SERG. In Europe we have a lot of traffic within stop and go. I dont want to make a break after 10 min in traffic yam to cool the engine down :-X

something is happening, I believe, in the tune. if you're getting temps of 300+F then something is wrong, either air blockage or fuel. does the bike start ok?
what lubes are you using.
go back yo where this was not happening and try and figure what you did to the bike that is causing this issue.

I would tend to agree.....not normal, we have high heat here, and the bikes will not "shut down" on their own accord.
If your dealer will not fix the issue, find another one. Your '09 should still be under warranty!

If you just used the SEST to install one of the canned maps for the new pipes, you are probably still running very lean at idle and low speeds.  See if you can get the bike on a dyno and check the air fuel ratios in closed loop mode, I'll bet they are very lean.  A good tune may eliminate most of your temp concerns.

First check the motor for sumping. This is done by letting the hot motor idle for 20-30 seconds, shut it off and drain the residual oil out of the bottom of the crankcase. Measure the amount. Get 150ml+ and then the cam chest comes apart looking for an oil pump problem and the scavenge oring is replaced bare minimum.
If the motor is not sumping then go into the SEST software and change the "Closed Loop Bias" and set that number to 798. This will drop the closed loop area so that is runs an AFR of ~14.3 and this will cool the motor considerably.

Second on what Jerry said, Edd 5 added a little fuel to mine at idle, 13.5 Keeps it nice and cool....

General not relevant to the original poster
Idle and putting is zero or near zero load. AFR in the low 14 range will keep the motor cool and not waste fuel. Timing is a big factor in this heat scheme and the factory timing can be raised considerably at idle and off idle. Result less heat, fuel mileage potentially increases. As soon as you roll-on then the timing may need to be pulled back at lower rpm ranges. Pinginging is the enemy and using the Delphi Ion sensing and a "data" run with the SERT or TTS can help tune out the ping without drenching it with fuel.
Hot, the term, is subjective and the pipes are damn hot but the oil temp and cylinder head temps are the critical ones to watch.

For the original poster
The 310°F oil is EXTREME and indicates a mechanical problem most likely sumping IME

ASK YOUR DEALER ABOUT PRODUCT CODE 0906. MY 08 FXSTSSE2 IS DOING THE SAME THING. SEEMS THAT THEY ARE RUNNING WAY TO LEAN. P.C. 0906 CALLS FOR BUNT OIL, OVERHEATING, BLOWN REAR HEAD GASKETS, LEAKING REAR CYLINDER BASE GASKETS. I'M GUESSING ALL DO TO EXREME CONSISTENT OVERTEMPS. TOOK MINE IN @200 MILES, THEY FLASHED THE ECM, BUT MY TEMPS ARE REAL HIGH, AND ITS ONLY IN THE LOW 70'S HERE. PUT UP A POST ABOUT IT WAITING TO SEE WHAT REPLIES COME BACK.
