oil Pump Failure (640 miles on bike)
« on: September 27, 2009, 08:59:00 PM »

A group of three of us took off last wednesday for Thunder Beach in Panama city and about 80 miles from home my oil pressure started to drop significantly. We limped it into Riders HD in trussville AL and after diagnosis , decided that the oil pump had failed  (640 miles on bike). It took about 6 hours for the bike to cool and necessary repairs to be made. But on the down side the tech forgot to tighten the rocker box bolts on the rear head and it blew oil all over the side of the bike before we discovered the leak. What a crappy way to start out a trip that really turned out to be quite fun. Just thought I would alert you guys to pay close attention to your oil pressure guage.

Wow...this was on the 10? What caused the pump to fail?

the tech never did find a smoking gun,, the initial thought was an o-ring on the side of the pump, but upon removal it was ok. the planetary gears in the pupm were overheated and very blue in color.  My dealer is going to come and get it this week and give it the once over to make sure its alright. Timmy at Bumpus in murfreesboro Tn is awesome,, he really takes care of his customers.

You didn't say how low the oil pressure got when you continued to ride.  That being said if it got hot enough to turn the gears in the oil pump blue, I would be pushing for a new engine.  Think for a moment how much more heat is in the cylinders or crank surfaces.  They can check it out until the cows come home, but if they don't tear it down completely, you really won't know how much damage was done.  Personally, if the oil pressure failed on my bike, I would pull over and call for help or send one of my riding partners for a trailer.  I really don't think I would continue to ride (unless I could turn it off and coast downhill ;D).  Sorry to hear of the problem.  Did I mention I would request a new engine?????
