150MM Rear Tire
« on: December 11, 2005, 09:16:20 AM »

Anyone tried, or actually using, the 150MM rear tire that comes on the Heritage Softail on a '05 S/E Glide? Seems it would work, any help appreciated.

It will fit if you remove the lower belt guard. However the 150 for the softail bikes is a different compound tire that may not last as long on a touring bike.

I've seen it used on two seperate occassions on an Eglide.  The belt guards do have to come completely off to make it work.  I, personally, wouldn't want to do it after seeing the damage that can be caused to both belt and sprocket with even a small pebble, twig or general road debri.  The softail tire is a softer compound, but haven't heard about the wear when installed on a heavy dresser.  I suspect the wear wouldn't be an issue unless you combined the heaveir weight with a lot of throttle twistin'.

Thanks for the response, taking the belt gaurd off is not a problem. I did some measuring today and everything appears Doable. I notice a guy I ride with gets about identical wear on his Heritage as I do on my bikes (RK or SEEG) and Heritage weighs about the same as a RK so wear on a 401 or 402 will be about the same. I think I will make that my project next saturday.
Thanks again.

You can alter the beltguard, as opposed to taking it off completely.  One of the most common ways for the belt to break is to get a stone between the belt & the pulley. The belt guard affords considerable protection. I altered mine with a die grinder. al

Well, no 150x16 tire, I changed my mind and have decided to Install 18" Weld Blade's. I sent an email to Metzler about a 150/18 with enough weight capacity to handle our bikes, no response yet. I went to the webpage for Metzler, just to much info to asborb. I WILL post photos of the new wheels as soon as rear tire size is determined. Frt I am using the 140/18. I intend to use the Weld matching Rotors for the wheels, but have no decided on the Calipers yet, leaning toward the Hog Hawlters mainly because they have no manufacturer info cast into body, they are just smooth. Original thought was to use the Brembo's but they still do not have a direct bolt caliper, must use a A-Dapter plate, that is not something I find attractive. Progressive's I know work great, but I hate to pay big bucks to advertise for Progressive, they cast there PM everywhere. Hope to get this all here by week after X-Mas for vacation install.
I saw an 05 Ultra with a 160 x 18 Metzler radial on the back. Could not find the owner, but I saw nothing changed except the lower belt gaurd (plastic) was missing totally and it seemed to have "machined" spacers vs the stock ones. Looked GOOD from the rear. I am still a little skittish about radials on a Harley, Anyone tried this??
