Need help with front fork oil change 2005 SEEG
« on: October 02, 2009, 11:29:21 AM »

I'm about to change my fork oil on my 2005 SEEG and have a couple of questions.  Is the left for on our bikes the cartridge type and if so is there anyway to change the fork oil    without removing it.  I'm in the midst of doing the Wild 1 575 bars (what a pita) and want to do the fork oil while I have it stripped down.  Any help will of course be greatly appreciated.

Regards, Moe

Both forks on the SEEG's are the old style damper rod only models.  Don't forget, the SEEG's came with the lowered forks, not the standard e-glide forks with one cartridge and one damper rod (dumbest idea in a long time, mismatched forks).

How many miles are on the bike?  If you don't have all that many, you can just drain the oil with the little drain screws and refill (suggest you measure how much comes out of each leg to get a good idea if you've drained most of it or not).  However, if you have a ton of miles, it would be best to actually remove the forks and disassemble them.  This will allow you to completely drain and clean out the tubes and damper rods, and to inspect/replace the seals and bushings.

Thanks for the info Jerry.  Funny the SE service manual supplement doesn't mention this.  It just refers you to the regular manual which says it is a cartridge type in the left side.  I didn't think it was when as I just drained the oil and I got 10.1 ounces out of each side and both have the same cap etc.  I have 27000 miles on the bike so probably will just refill with new fork oil.

Thanks again, Moe

Moe, if you are that far into the front end it really isn't much more effort to dissamble the shocks completely. You might even consider putting in the Ricor's while you're in there. It does help to have an extra set of hands around when installing the new seals for the first time though. Arn't your wasting precious dry weather days having the bike down, or is it winter up there already?  ;) Roger

Well I got the fork oil change done and almost finished the Wild 1 575's.  Fork oil was easy.  Bars are a different story.  Not quite winter up here yet Roger but getting closer.  It had been raining quite a bit earlier in the week so I thought it was a good time to do the deed.  Changing out the front speakers as well and then hopefully will look at doing gear drive cams.  I have two other bikes to ride so no big deal having this one hung up.

Take care and thanks again.  Just need to figure out why my throttle is sticking now.  Another job for tomorrow.

Cheers, Moe

Hey Moe, if you're not going to try the Ricors, you might want to try the Screamin' Eagle fork oil.  Some like the way it makes the front end feel.   ;)  spyder

I'm using that and it is better then the fluid that was stock in the front end.

I was going to use the SE fork oil but after reading a lot of threads I decided on 15W.  Trying Belray for now to see how it is.

I am using the BelRay 15w in both bikes and like it a lot.  Not as stiff as the SE oil, but much better than stock.
