Oil change
« on: October 02, 2009, 02:29:54 PM »

Got home from MV Thursday afternoon, figured after the final 300 miles would be a good time to change the oil. Good and hot and well circulated.

This change came later then normal, little over 6k on the clock.

Engine oil looked normal (compared to previous 5K changes)
Primary looked normal and neither had any buildup on the magnets.

The trans though ................
This is a Baker gear set and when installed I used the supplied "Spectro" lube.

Compared to Redline HD Shockproof (new) the Spectro looks more like just plain "red" oil, nowhere near the "look and feel" of the Redline. Those that use Redline know what I mean.

Every time I had changed the Redline the oil came out looking the same as it went in.
This Spectro stuff looked like primary oil coming out.
Granted this oil change had more use then normal, MV in June and this trip. And we did a LOT of mountain running coming come.

Anyone notice a difference in oil drains with the Baker? Ever use the Spectro?

Nope.  From day one, Bel-Ray comes out as red as it went in.  Other than the SYNIII with which the bike shipped, which was dropped as soon as it got home, and brief period of Amsoil 20W50, the transmission has always seen the Bel-Ray 85W140 Hypoid Gear Oil stuff.

I wonder if the Spectro (and I've never seen it) has some sort of detergent additive and just cleaned things up real good in there during the past 6000 miles, Duane?  I don't know.  Gotta be good stuff or Bert wouldn't ship it with his product.

BTW, the builder's kit for my OD6 in the Green Bike didn't come with oil, but they did provide a list of recommended oils:

1)  Red Line 75W250 Heavy Shockproof
2)  Spectro 75W140SPL
3)  Bel-Ray 80W90
4)  Torco 85W140
5)  Amsoil 75W90

I guess I missed that   :huepfenlol2:

Henry, that is the first oil change on the gear set, that trans was "clean room" clean before he Spectro went in. As far as what oil goes in - the bottle in the kit was a Baker labeled 23 ounce bottle, just the right amount.

Although I don't feel anything new going on I have noticed the trans "rattles" at times on the 1-2, 2-3 shift.

Rattle is the best way I can describe the feeling I get on my left foot when up shifting.

IIRC you are not using the DD6. I'm just really surprised at how the oil looked on the drain.

Every other oil change on the trans always had the  :nixweiss: "this oil is so clean why change it"  :nixweiss: thoughts. Keep changing it  'cause it's only 20-24 ounces and no filter.

You remember correctly, Duane.  I am not using the DD6.  I'm using the OD6 in the Green Bike, and will install an OD6 in the Purple Bike as well.
This is strange.  Did you mention anything about the drain plug?  Any fuzz?  Did you strain the used oil to trap any non ferrous particulate.......just in case something is "grinding" in that box?  I'm reaching here, but what I've read from your description doesn't sound right.......IMVHO.  One other consideration:  understand the gearset was clean room clean, but what about the box?  Memory says you got that box from Brian after that gut wrenching seal pulling ordeal.  Was it equally as clean?  Again......just trying help you deduce the most probable causes of how transmission oil gets dirty.  And even though that gearset might have been clean room clean, unless you had it apart before you stuffed it in the box, do you know for sure all of the internals were clean room clean as well?

This was a just over 6K oil change (certainly not my norm - but Maggie Valley got in the way  ;D)

All three magnets had almost "0" debris, little enough that I was surprised at how clean they were. I always had chips on the primary before changing the ring and pinion this year.

The gear case was in "like new" condition when I got it, also very surprised there.
As far as the gear set goes. It comes packed in a sealed plastic bag, wet with assembly oil. It certainly looked good enough for me to not do any thing other then just install it.

I'm going to add some lighter oil today (all three holes) warm it up good and then dump it. Putting the Redline back in since I have several quarts sitting on the shelf.

I don't really feel anything bad going on, so I'll finish out the season then then will at least pull the top cover off over the winter.
I have to pull the inner primary anyway to adjust the shifter pawl (stupid design)

This is the Spectro that came with the kit

Baker pan was spotless, doesn't hold trans oil anyway, except for the tiny bit in the channel.

Just got done running clean oil through the bike, once for the engine and primary and twice for the tranny, then dumping it.

Now I'm out of oil  :nixweiss: cant start the engine until my delivery on Tuesday.
