Am I missing something here? The stock filter element is washable, just like the other stock filter elements. You only need to replace it if it gets torn or finally becomes so dirty it can't be cleaned anymore. I certainly wouldn't think it would be necessary to replace it at 5000 miles. If you want it to always look nice and white and clean, that ain't gonna happen. There's a big difference between cosmetically clean and clean enough to flow air properly. And a K&N or other oiled filter isn't going to be any different in that regard. That red oil on a K&N rapidly becomes grey and dirty looking as it does it's job.
Still haven't seen K&N offer a replacement element yet, so folks need to keep contacting them. Like they say, the squeaky wheel gets the grease.
