Saddlebag Locks
« on: October 06, 2009, 09:36:35 AM »

I found this in Hot Bagger this month--don't know if anybody has used them or seen them before. Nice looking locks to lock the bags on to the bike. Not cheap--but neither are the bags!!!

That website doesn't show much detail of the product.  :-\ spyder

Pretty poor web site, maybe it's just new though. Interesting, no physical address, but a PO box in San Leandro (by Jim's) and an area code is in the Sacramento/gold country area.  Looks to be a nice product, although about 300% to high in price.

Yep.....kinda what I was thinking.  It'd be nice to have 'em locked since it's so easy to pop 'em off.....but, that's a lotta 'bling' money.  And my scooter is very seldom out of sight anyway.  ??? har!  :drink: spyder

Maybe I'm just a pessimist, but... if the bag lids are locked, then why would you need to lock them to the bike?

It's just another thing to make it harder to steal. It also looks like it may cover the bolts holding the bracket to the bike which would be a good thing. But yes..poor website...that would be a phone call to ask.

Because of the design of the bags mounts that allows the bags to be popped off easily even when the lids are locked.  :-[ spyder

Probably shouldn't have told him that spyder, now he'll be paranoid like a lot of others. ::)

Wanna ride, if you take a close look at the bracket and wire form that the quarter turn pins attach to, you might note that it's fairly easy to access the bolts holding the brackets to the frame, and if a thief didn't want to take the time to unscrew the bolts they would just use a screwdriver to "spread" the wire form and pop the pin out.  Professional thieves can remove a locked bag in less time than it took me to type this.

Can't really see how the bag locks work from the one photo on the web site.

From the poor pics on the website it is hard to tell. From the pic at the bottom of the site it looks like they are deep enough to cover the entire bolt and bracket assy that attaches the bag to the bike. That would be a good thing but a phone call would be needed to confirm it.

I've always been curious of that too. It's take a pretty bold SOB to try and pull that off, but I'm sure it happens. I personally haven't heard of it or don't know anyone it's happened too.

There's no shortage of bold (stupid) sob's out there.  I didn't use to worry so much about some stupid sob stealing my little skull cap, but I don't want to lose my full coverage helmet.  I see a lot of those little un-licensed 2cycle scooters running around with the rider wearing nice full coverage helmets.  Can't believe they're paying up for those to ride the whiskey-bikes.  :-\ spyder

Saw one of those scooters this morning. The gal had a full face helmet and thin long coat and it was 40 degrees out. Have to give her credit-------not sure I'd be going to work on my bike.

My HOG Chapter brought up this issue as several bags were stolen in our area. Even if locked the lid can be easily popped.  One solution is to get rid of the quick release bolts. Another solution is to have "police locks" installed (keyed the same as all the other locks).
