Let's talk Trailers for a moment
« on: October 06, 2009, 09:43:46 AM »

Specifically "cargo" trailers that you would pull behind a motorcycle. There doesn't seem to be much discussion on  this topic - and with very few exceptions I seem to see a general lack of trailer hitches attached to bikes that have photos posted to this site.
I would love to hear about trailering experiences, best / most recommended hitch manufacturer, and comments [both positive and negative] on the individual styles and types of trailers currently available in the marketplace.
I am seriously contemplating a trailer purchase for my Canyon Copper 2008 FLHTCUSE3 and would like to make sure all the bases are covered before jumping in with both feet.
Your comments are greatly appreciated.

I had an 06 Autumn Haze my trailer and bike are one of there adverstisements. Loved the extra space, the trailer pulled very well.

Nothing bad to say, worth the investment.

I was going to say 'welcome to the site' but I see you've been a member almost two years.  Anyway good to see your post.  You will find several members who have trailers myself included.  There are several good brands and everyone has their personal preference.  But from what I've read and heard Bushtec is the standard much as Harley is with heavyweight bikes.  Just yesterday I came home from a three week 6,300 mile road trip and I don't know how I could have done it without my Bushtec.

As far as any negatives go the only one I've found is having to look a little harder for that right parking space and backing up takes a little practice.  Once you are underway you hardly know the trailer is back there.  Especially with the 110 engine I have all the torque I need for highway speed passing and climbing hills.

Welcome to the board!  There are a number of threads on both kinds of trailers.....try the search feature.  Bushtec now has a hitch that's hidden when the trailer is not on the bike.

EDIT**  I see a couple others already gave the same advice. :nixweiss:

I've had this trailer for a few years, pulled it all over the country.  I really like having the weight low and behind when traveling.  Beats loading the bike up so high in the rear.

I don't think I will ever again be able to take a week long trip (and longer ones) 2-up without our Bushtec trailer.

Anne (and  I!) is way too spoiled now with the storage.....4 Cowboy hats carried, 2 more bought in Gatlinburg, 6 Baseball Hats carried and 4 more bought along the way.  Also picked up on that recent MV trip, a couple bottles of Sticky Fingers BBQ sauce, 2 Bubba Gump Glasses, a case of Cashiers Condiments, a couple of Jars from the Pepper Palace, new Prints from Charleston, Savannah and Beaufort, a new SE Sweatshirt and Jacket, a new Jacket for Anne and 15 new HD shirts....EACH!

Its so much better to load up the Bustec rather than the tourpak and rack...the bike handles better and you really don't know its there. When away from the bike everything is secure and locked so you can stop and enjoy a meal or check out a interesting location. I'm sure folks will be giving you a lot of input about trailer brands and preferences, but I'm partial to Bustec because of the suspension and quality. You also will have to look hard to see a Bushtec hitch, the receiver is almost invisible with the hitch out.   Doc

First of all - Thank You folks for your responses.
I had NO idea there were so many choices when it came to trailers manufacturers and styles. Thought about "googling" - but trusted the folks here on this site to provide information that was more objective and also more specific to the CVO Ultra's.
Actually a little disappointed with the results - I had hoped there were only a couple of makes and models so the choice would be easier. Now it appears I have A LOT of research to do.
I have never pulled a trailer. Never thought I wanted to. Always concerned about the weight pushing the rear of the bike during a panic / emergency braking situation.
However - Wife and I just got back from a 5 day trip from Vancouver Island to CoosBay Oregon and back. We were loaded up pretty good and with brisk cross-winds coming in off the Pacific there were times that it was difficult to hold the bike steady and upright when sitting at a stoplight in some of the Coastal Communities. Too much weight packed too high. Yes - I know - Not a great idea and I know better.
After this short trip I started thinking more and more about the benefits of a trailer.
I am OK when travelling solo. After all - "I" can pack light enough for a month on the road with no overlaoding - but when the Mrs. is with me it is another story.
