103 Noise
« on: October 08, 2009, 11:21:46 AM »

I've had two SE 103's, one in a '06 SEUC and now a '03 SERK.  My question is, are these 103's inherently noisier than say the 88 or 96 inchers?  I had a '04 Road King with the 88 and don't remember it making nearly the amount of noise these 103's make.  In fact I thought the 103 on my '06 SEUC was bad but I think the '03 SERK is even worse.  If that's just the way they are, is there any cure or fix?

I'd say yes to the 88 and no to the 96. The 103 has a longer stroke than the '88, which would have pistons with shorter skirts on a 103, causing more piston noise. The 96 has the same stroke as the 103, and the piston sizes between a 96 and 103 are close enough that they'd make similar noise. Noise is very subjective. Everyone thinks these things are noisey. I don't think much about it unless I hear BAD noises! That's all I GAS about! JMO! ;)

Sometimes with all the noise going on it's difficult for the average person to tell what is normal nosie and what is "Bad" noise.    :-\

I've got an '05 FLHTCSE2 and the 103 runs great...smooth & quiet.  I'll admit though that it doesn't run as smooth as my TC 95.  The only problem I've been having is when I shut the bike off (say to fuel up) and start it again right away (within minutes) I get a loud clanking  sound and if it doesn't start, I hear the built up pressure escaping.  I've been to Harley and they told me that the starter is probaby going and I should upgrade to the 1.4kv starter.  I argued with the tech that the bike CAME WITH a 1.4kv starter...but then again, he told me that my bike was a Road Glide (because of the yellow color).  It took me 5 minutes to convince him that it was an E-Glide so lots of luck there!!!  Any thoughts on this??

mines noisy as hell...scares me sometimes, some noises come only from certain riding positions (leaning back, vs upright)

My thoughts are not to let that tech ANYWHERE NEAR your bike!!! :nixweiss: :nixweiss: :nixweiss:

Even when everything is right they are noisier.
Valve weight, and valve spring pressure are contributors

Has anyone experienced a very loud chirp or screech on deceleration (down shifting) when the bike is cold (first run of the day) then it goes away after a couple of minutes?  It also may be coming from the primary, it's hard to tell.  My dealer tech's were no help with this problem.

Not on downshifting but I get it when I shut the bike down on the 05 SEEG.

Is that something I could do or do I need a tech with proper tools to set the proper tention?

Easily done at home. Check the SM for details and you will need the wrenches for the nut and adjuster on the axle. The sizes are 36mm and motionpro, georges, jims all make a special tool.
