Dented the tank :( Safe to ride and cost???
« on: October 09, 2009, 08:25:15 PM »

Getting ready to leave for our Blue Ridge Parkway trip tomorrow...  As I was loading her ( 08 SERK Anniv Color) on the trailer,  the ramp slipped and she want over...

One of the O-Ring Tie-Downs on the side put a dent into her tank

Anyone have any idea at what point she is not safe to ride?? No leaks and it just nicked the paint,  but a good thumbs worth of indent....

Also how much are these tanks with the gold leaf and how long does HD take to replace them....  I will have to give the insurance company a call when we get back (if its good to ride..)

If it ain't leakin, don't worry about it. Is it creased, or just pushed in? If it's creased, keep an eye on after the vibration sets in awhile. If it's just pushed in, you can ride it forever that way! ;)

In addition, if it's just pushed in and not creased you might be able to get a good ding man to pop it back out.  Look around for one of those paintless dent removal companies, they have them all over the country.

You may want to post a picture of the dent and send a PM to 09S/E roadglide (Rick) he is in the paintless dent removal business I believe.

As one of the other guys said if it is pushed in and not creased you may be able to get it repaired by a dent specialist.  You might want to try a suction cup on the outside with some air pressure on the inside. (of course you would have to drain the tank) I have fixed small and large dents like this before. The large ones were usually on a car and pulled out with a suction cup similar to what a glass repair company would use to hold a panel of glass. The suction cups come in different sizes. I would hope that if you could figure out how to put a fair amount of air pressure in the tank and pull on the dent on the outside with a suction cup of the right size it might just pop out without any damage to the paint. There is a place called Grainger (grainger.com) they sell a lot of specialized tools. They might have some different size suction cups. Just some things that crossed my mind.( anything is worth a try before you mess with your paint) I hope this helps, or gives you some ideas. Good Luck. CAHDBIKER

I got fustrated and put the bike back in to the storage shed...

If I have a $250 deductable,  isnt it worth it just to get it done right?  Its gotta be $$$ for a replacement from harley

There is one small crease and the thumb size one is just pushed in.  It hit one of the O-Ring tie downs on the frame of the trailer...

Thx for all the comments,  I am a freaking nervous wreck right now... If I wasnt leaving for a trip I would be ok...  I will post a pic tomm...

Ride the bike and have the dealer order you a new tank...because it's an out-of-model year CVO color it can take as much as 6 months for it to come in.  They only paint the parts when they have enough to do a batch of them, they don't do onesy-twosies....so........It took eight weeks to get my outer fairing, and it's a current model year color.

it has to be big $$$$--retail on one saddlebag bottom is $1260. The dealer is ordering one for me for a slight paint bubble towards the bottom. As long as it's warranty I said why not.....

I can't even begin to think what a tank would cost $1500-2K??

I'd go and ride the bike. just a dent. by the way, ding in gas tanks are not so easy to fix. rick was talking about this very thing in MV. gotta be able to get to back of the dent. any way, how is your insurance handeling this?

Scott,

Don't give a little dent another thought... I rode my '97 for over 2 years with a dent much bigger than that before getting it fixed.  It was at the lower front end of the left tank where I couldn't see it all the time.  When I finally got around to getting it looked at, my dealer had one of those pop out guys do his thing and although it wasn't perfect, no one would ever know unless on a very close inspection.

The point is, go and ride.  Enjoy yourself.  This is just what you need to clear your head.  I realize it may not look so good, but it can be fixed (or replaced) in time.  Your time in the saddle is NOW!

Enjoy it!

A suction cup is not gonna get it ! There are no straight sides on a tank and the metal is VERY ridged, to ridged for a cup.

That does Suck !!  It may be repairable but you will probably be replacing the tank. At least 250. is not that bad of a hit. Post some pics of the dent or send them to me and Ill be happy to advise.

If you cannot get the dent to pop out with air pressure and a industrial quality suction cup (09S/E said it probably won't work and since the metal is thicker than I thought He is probably right). I know how irritated it can be but  I would just ride it like some of the other guys said and try to put it out of your mind until you can get it fixed. Life is too short, and besides if that is the worst thing that every happens to your bike you got it made. Naturally you will want it fixed, but don't let it spoil your ride. Last summer on my way back from Nebraska I pulled off the side of Highway 120 in CA(beautiful scenic ride from Jackpot Nevada to Lee Vining  CA) to put on a jacket because the sun was going down and we were starting to get cold. I pulled off to the side and the gravel on the shoulder was about 8 inches deep. I lost my balance and the bike almost went over on the right side. The gravel put some small scratches in the bottom of the fairing lowers and a couple of small ones on the bottom of the saddle bag, but I held it up from going over all the way and after my wife got off her and I managed to get it upright and out of the gravel ( this was like 3/4 inch rock with pea gravel mixed in so it was hard to get a foot hold plus as we all  know those dressers are heavy) I started to get into pissed off mode and then I thought F it. We already rode 3500 miles, had a great time and it was not worth it to let a small thing put a damper on such a great ride (L.A. to Gordon Nebraska and back mostly side roads). Sorry for the extended response but that it the way I handle the small things. I hope we can see a before and after picure. Have a great ride. CAHDBIKER

You guys are better then a beer and prozac!  :orange: :orange:

I do feel better as I have been a little neurotic about this trip (this is the longest one since my bad accident July 4th 08)

My only worry now is safety,  as you really cant see the dent... Just dont want to leak gas in the middle of the mountains..  Might see if I can pickup some gas tank sealant....

What better of a place to get great advise and also to have good people help me empty my wallet on cool things :)
