it has to be big $$$$--retail on one saddlebag bottom is $1260. The dealer is ordering one for me for a slight paint bubble towards the bottom. As long as it's warranty I said why not.....

I can't even begin to think what a tank would cost $1500-2K??

Bingo!!!! WE HAVE A WINNER!!!!

Be Safe

You guys are better then a beer and prozac!  :orange: :orange:

I do feel better as I have been a little neurotic about this trip (this is the longest one since my bad accident July 4th 08)

My only worry now is safety,  as you really cant see the dent... Just dont want to leak gas in the middle of the mountains..  Might see if I can pickup some gas tank sealant....

What better of a place to get great advise and also to have good people help me empty my wallet on cool things :)

Scott

Scott, I would not recommend tank sealer for this at all.  First off you need to remove the tank and all internal components to be able to rotate the tank to get the sealer on all surfaces.  Tank sealers are for last resorts on a tank that you cannot repair in any other manner, like a 1956 G80S Matchless.  Then and only then would I try to use a tank sealer.

I'm sticking my neck out here, but I would wager that you could take a normal shop sized ballpeen hammer and put 20 hard hit dents in your tank and ride forever without any concerns of leakage.

If the dent is on the side, front etc away from any seams, you are good to go without hesitation.  From what you've described, the tank side swiped a tie down hook so it would be on the side of the tank anyway, don't sweat the small stuff.

All of us have told you not to worry and just ride until it gets fixed, in any manner appropriate.  I realize your anticipation about the trip and that you want to be safe, but I would put this on my worry list and leave the list home for the trip.

Enjoy your trip and don't think twice about a small dent in the side of the tank.

Again though, I would NOT try to put tank sealer in your tank for this dent.

Enjoy your trip and ride safe.

Hi Scott,
Murphy's Law; Rule 638A: "All Motorcycles Will Fall Over, Usually At The Worst Possible Moment!"
True. I do a lot of touring with a group of long time friends and helping some one upright their overloaded, friggen HEAVY dresser is a routine event. Some good natured ribbing, a quick visual inspection, and we are on our way again.
I wholeheartedly agree with the other members, from your description of the dent, if it's not leaking now, it's not going to leak. The tank's sheetmetal is heavy gauge and can take a fair amount of abuse. My advise is to do an up close inspection of that side of the bike and double check for any other damage, load her up on the trailer, and go enjoy the ride.Trust me, you will regret it if you don't. Me and the above mentioned group spent a week in that area last month and had a great time. The Blue Ridge Parkway, Smoky MTS., Appalachians, will completely clear your head, and if you are still thinking about the dent, a little trip on Rt 129 in Deal's Gap will solve that!!
Do your trip, enjoy this still great country and deal with repairs when you get back.
Best Wishes & Have a safe ride.

Deaf1 I have felt your pain. My dent came while on vacation in the smokies. My knee dented the tank pretty good in a pretty bad spot. I almost threw up! Pretty much ruined the rest of the trip for me. Got home and pulled the dash and fuel pump out and called my paintless dent guy. In spit of the heavy metal and the dent right in a curve, he got it COMPLEATLY out!  There is hope. Give one of them a call and let him take a look. Good Luck!

Well,

So far no leak.. I am in Chattanoga and we have put on about 800 miles...  We decided to pass on Deals Gap and Blue Ridge because of the 95% chance of rain.. We are hitting some of the small roads and will take the Natchez Parkway back up north...

Good run so far....  1 hiway peg mount cracked,  and my tire is cupping, but thats cool... To be expected....

The mountains are beyond words!!!!  I have been checking this thread via my blackberry and it has kept my sane...

Here is our current route http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?doflg=ptm&ie=UTF8&msa=0&msid=109096164665581799687.000475bf2513bee2a3806&ll=34.872412,-87.418213&spn=1.811671,3.532104&z=8

Not as far east as we wanted but its good...

Thanks to all!!!

Good choice...going on the trip!  Life's too freakin' short to worry about dents and such.  I have a buddy who bought a new bagger, rode it home for the first time, drank a beer, crunched up the can and threw it at the tank while saying "Well, the first scratch is outta the way."

Glad you got the cupping tire replaced.  Now, that's a 'safety' issue, unlike the dented gas tank.   Enjoy the rest of your ride with a smoooth new tire. :coolblue:  har.  :drink: spyder
