How do these plugs look to you??
« on: October 18, 2009, 08:17:26 PM »

I don't remember which is front or rear, but they look pretty good to me.  This is after 5,000 miles.

Have a look at an illuminated plug magnifying reader-the plug is "read" deep down in the porcelain.

That's what I was thinking.  Juuuuuuust a tad.  I wasn't sure though, which is why I posted.  My version of perfect has always been like a weak cup of hot chocolate.  A slight tan.

Can someone enlighten me (us?) on the "illuminated plug magnifying reader" that gordy mentioned?  What do you see down there that's not visible up top?  I've seen so many posts/pics about reading plugs, always with the naked eye.  Always open to learning something new!!!

You can clamp a mini-Maglite in your mouth, and get an "old man" magnifying glass ( I have many of 'em) and have a good look at the plugs.........or..........
Most parts houses have a little magnifying lens with a light attached. They also have some nifty gap setting tools to get the electrodes gapped properly and "square" to the tip.
Cheap (low cost) investments for your tool box.
Plugs look ok for the new bikes.....I like just a little more tan. JMHO, of course!

They look fine after 5k...should seen mine out of the stock 110 at 3500 miles, bleached and wore out.

I just went to with ngk plugs, D&D 2-1 quiet baffle, Se air filter, tune, we'll see.  Bike is much peppier but still warm, no knock noticed but it could be the loud quiet baffle too... :confused5:

I'll say this much, the bike runs great, fires right up 100% of the time, no popping or hesitation, doesn't feel too hot, I'm happy with the power, it doesn't ping at any altitude (been to 12,000 feet), and it gets great mileage.  I'm thinking if it ain't broke don't fix it.

Assuming it is a little lean, what's the harm?

If you have the discipline, I agree, if it ain't broke...don't fix it!

Where is the fun in that?  hehe..

There is no harm in a little lean.  A lotta lean causes heat, maybe detonation, burned pistons and valves and all kinds of bad things....  But you're not a lotta lean, you're a little lean.  You'd be fine..

But you can tell I'm itch'n to do something.............

Nah that's ok, I'll let it go.  I built another bike & there was always something to deal with.  This bike is so darn reliable and easy it's driving me nuts.  I think I'll change the muffs.

Pick your favorite search engine-yahoo or google and type in "reading spark plugs".  Lots of good info for those who are interested.  The most important thing is to read the plug after a high rpm run.  The engine is switched off at high rpm(clicked) amd coasted to a stop-then pull the plugs to read them.  Letting the engine idle kills the reading. We gave up reading plugs at the drag races, many just check the EGT and keep it under 1200F.
