Rear Drive Belt
« on: December 17, 2005, 07:12:41 PM »

How much Horsepower can the stock HD drive belt take (do they have a rating). I think the FLSTFSE belt is 1 1/8 inch. Are there stronger belts available or is the HD belt strong enough for 115-120 HP (I have been know to drop he clutch from time to time)

Any info would be much appreciated

Cheers

Yeah, 'er 'uh, AUSSIE,
I don't know the technical difference, or if their is any, but we put a Side-Car belt on Ol' Maudie.  I don't think you could actually break a stock or a Side-Car belt.  They may come off, or the gear spin inside 'em, or jump the teeth, if you will, as the result of a hard snatch, I've been told.  But as for me, No Worries!  TWIST THAT BABY!  [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif] Later--HUBBARD

Aussie,

My SEEG had 117hp and I reefed the livin hell out of it, I'm talking holeshots, powershifts, wheelies, top end  and everything in between. And never had any problems with the drive belt. But I'm looking into the need for a heavier belt w/ my new motor when it gets done.

Like Hubbard said: Just TWIST IT...

I hate to disagree here but I personally have replaced belts that have snapped from doing burn outs. I am currently in the process of changing a Big Dog Chopper over to a chain drive because the owner is on his third belt. All of them have snapped doing burnies. They can and do break. But its not from normal riding, the occasion burnie, or even red light racing. Its from major abuse. In this guys case I told him that the belt is the weekest link, by going to a chain he is most likely going to break something else instead.

What size tyre does the Big Dog bike have on it?? Couldn't it be from much more rotational force due to the wide tyre & rim package.
More weight more meat on the ground to rotate....Belt breakage!!

Grover, The one I am working on now has a 240. I have seen the belts break on a road glide and electraglide's as well. My point in my last post was that they can and will break if abused. In all of the cases the rider was clowning around on the bike doing some major burnies.

There is a company making a Kevlar reinforced belt for the Victory Motorcycles. Arlen Ness is carrying them. They told me about them when I was getting the parts for the chain conversion. I'm not sure of the lenth or tooth count but next time I'm there I'll find out more about them.

For my opinion,  I think it would be foolish to go away from the belt.  They can take huge punishment, but they also provide a soft start cushion for those clutch drops that will keep you from breaking more important things.    I have spent the last 4 years TRYING to break the stock belt on my 105 horse softail which has had a hole in the middle of it from an entraped bolt since I brough tit home......  It's still on there ...  Looks just fine.  Does wicked wheelies and 4th gear burn-outs on a regular basis... ;)
