Advise/help on fuel filter housing?
« on: October 21, 2009, 07:56:04 PM »

Wife's new bike (05 SEEG) started to act up the other day, sounded like it was starved for fuel.  Had a friend who is a HD Certified mechanic drop by and he pointed out that there is a spraying noise when you turn on the bike.  Said it sounded like a fuel leak in the tank.  Pulled the fuel pump assembly out of the tank and turned it on, yep, it sprays.  He showed me how to take the fuel filter housing off, black plastic part that holds the fuel filter on.  I check my parts manual (09 SERG), it is a different set of parts.  He said this is a common problem with everyone using gas with ethanol these days.
My question is this housing, can't see any o-ring or seal, don't understand what is bad about it and I am wonering if this part comes as a kit or individual part, who has had problems or experience with this issue.  Any help or advise is appreciated.

Just replaced my fuel filter at 25K service this summer. That is a common problem. :(

The black plastic part is the pressure regulator. I have not seen these leak but have seen many many fuel lines with pin holes in them that can leak and spray fuel.

This doesn't show the regulator Jim mentions.  But you know where it is receiving the outlet side of the fuel filter.  Just in case it might have been dropped and not noticed as you were working with it there is an o-ring that goes on the fuel filter where the filter inserts in to the regulator.

Thanks dOOd, Jim, & 2Ln,
it came to me this morning as I lay there thinking about it.  It is probably the o-ring on the filter between the regulator and the filter body.  I didn't drop it or loose it as this condition was as installed and working.  But the ethanol might have degraded the o-ring so I get a leak between the regulator and the filter.  This is where it was spraying out when we removed the whole fuel assembly and turning the ignition on.  I guess I will go with replacing the filter (kit comes with new o-rings) and I might go with a new regulator also as it could be the regulator has been affected by the ethanol also.  I would hate to fix this twice.  It is really nice to get great advise, complete with parts lists and pictures.  I really appreciate CVOHARLEY.
