Towing a Trailer
« on: October 23, 2009, 03:24:56 AM »

I have heard many opinions but I have not actually READ it.  Will towing a trailer, Bushtec/American Legend or whatever brand, void the warrantee?

I towed a trailer and just removed the hitch when I took it in for service....plan on doing it with my new bike.  It also depends on the dealer....anyway

No, at least until you need warranty work performed. The only problem with removing the hitch is you have to do it each time you take it in for service. Depending on the dealer and your relationship with them, they may cover the majority of the work. But if the moto co. is involved. Good luck!
I don't understand their thinking on this. You can do as much if not more harm overloading the bike without using a trailer
than most do towing a trailer. The clutch may be the main issue in towing but that would be the same with overloading the bike.
My take on this is, I pull an American Legend and FTMC.

My dealer has NO issues with me pulling a trailer, on the road I have it set so the harness just unplugs and all I'm left with is my Flag holder (aka hitch) let them prove other wise.  I use a Bushtech hidden hitch.

It will void your warranty, but as said earlier, it depends on the dealer.  They will look for any excuse.  I pull a Bushtec and love it.  And if my fading memory doesn't fail me, H-D will sell you a sidecar and it also voids your warranty.  Go figure  FTW

I dont think I will ever travel with out a trailer. I think it makes the bike handle better at highway speeds, and my wife can buy want she wants and take as many pairs of shoes as she wants, if she is happy I'm happy. I talked with my dealer and they had no problem at all with warranty issues.

I don't know the validity of this but the owner of a dealership here in Ca. told me that Ca. law prohibits the discrimination of a warranty claim based on towing a trailer.  I tow and have had several original and extended engine warranty repairs at different facilities with no problems.

I noticed there is a sticker on top of the ac cleaner that says NEVER pull a trailer. I have pulled one for many years but not on the 07 cause I have been going back for repairs to many times. But I do know one thing about pulling one that is you can pull any trailer with ease when only one person on the bike, add a passenger and the whole thing changes, you can still do it but it does take more work. But then my trailer is a tent trailer that weighs 326 before you add any gear.

I have a american legend and use a hitch doctor hitch which allows you to pull the ball mount off easily. I also use mine for a flag bike and figure, let them prove it. I have towed over thousands of miles with a 2003 ultra with only the big bore kit and have to disagree with whoever said it is tough towing it if you are two up. You start a little slower and give yourself more room to stop. Other than that, it's great!

Yep!
BUT........depends if your dealer will work with you, and the nature of the failure.

I have a buddy with an 08 Ultra who called HD customer service after his selling dealer couldn't/wouldn't fix an ongoing starter problem, he said the gal on the phone took his information and then said "i see here that you tow a trailer, that voids the warranty" He told her that HD would have to prove that his trailer hitch caused the starter to quit, and that he would be calling his attorney. She immediately backed off and said they would get in touch with the dealer and find a solution to his starter problem. Apparently the selling dealer tried to put the screws to him by reporting to HD that he had a hitch on his bike. The dealer later replaced the starter and the trailer hitch was never mentioned.

That's what kills me; some dealers will tag ya for it, some won't.  Wish the MOCO would just do some research, toss out some guidelines and OK it,    Then it's case closed, no problem instead of this some times you're screwed, sometimes you're not.  Big investment to gamble with.  Suck to have a problem on the road and end up at a dealer who tags for it!  I've been pulling one since '89 and never worried about it, but this is the first time I've dropped this kind of cash on a bike AND doing an extended warranty, with 5 additional years is a long time to be taking the hitch and wiring harness off everytime I need service! (but thats just what I may be doing!!)

I pulled a timeout camper (312lbs empty)( fully loaded I guestimate 400+) from St Louis to Sturgis with a 2008 Heritage Classic (stock96) with my wife  and never had any issues, with or with out a passanger it feels the same to me.....But now I have a SESG and that will make it easier, it's worth it to take the hitch off everytime I go in for service, oil change every 2500 miles. Wanna play , you have to pay.....works for me.
Sorry :soapbox:
