ECM / Speedo - Tach / ETC gremlin still lives in my SERK4
« on: October 25, 2009, 03:51:12 PM »

My Gremlin is alive and well in my electronics, somewhere!  :'(    Sorry for the long post!

On Monday, October 19, I replaced my D&D Fat Cat with BUB 7 True Duals. When my scoot was hooked up to the dyno, we immediately observed the tachometer was no longer working. The back light in the speedo works as well as the 6th gear light, check engine light, low fuel light, etc. The speedo itself works fine also. It should be noted: this is my second speedo. This speedo was installed on The dyno was completed with everything appearing ok. This speedo was installed on September 14th.

Yesterday, October 24th, I was riding as it had finally quit raining. I was approx. 20 miles from home on a rural road. As I rolled into the throttle, the motor stopped building rpm and dropped to 2400 rpm. No matter how much throttle I gave her, she would not go over 2400 rpm. I also notice the check engine light was on. The motor would idle at 2000 and the idle was very rough. I limped the bike home afraid to stop as I was in the boonies.

After I got her in the garage, I shut her down. After letting her cool down, I restarted the motor. The electronic throttle control system seems to be working again and the engine light did not come back on. My SM thinks it is the speedo again.

Here is a synopsis of the ECM / Ignition / Electrical issues with my scoot to date:

April 09, 2008 Ignition switch replace due to fault spring detent holding cover closed

September 25, 2008 Flush mount fuel gauge all lights will not light up with a full tank

May 15, 2009 ECM / SERT tossing codes causing motor shut down once. Hooked up to Digital Tech showed no issue. Went to Eureka Springs. On the way home experience turn signals not self cancelling. Set up appt with shop

May 23, 2009 thru June 17, 2009
-Speedo / Tachometer faulty: When one gallon of fuel remains, the mileage indicator show 103 miles of fuel remaining.
-Turn signals do not alway self cancel.
-Motor will infrequently shut down when I pulled the clutch or stutter when at a constant speed. Can not recreate the problem or predict when it may occur.
-Security system: The alarm sounded and lights flashed while the FOB was sitting on the seat. After running several diagnostic test, it is determined the TSSM is bad.
-TSSM is replace and the speedo / tach, turn signals, FOB and idle all seem to be working properly. Told they will work on the decal popping but I can pick her up. Bike starts displaying codes while dyno tune being attempted.
-Digital Tech shows the ECM must be replaced. SM insist the race tuner be removed and a super tuner be installed under warranty. The above is done on MoCo dime.

June 17 - 19, 2009
Motor dies: I had gone 10 blocks from the dealer when the motor dies. The motor was very difficult to restarting and took several attempts. Upon restart, I rode back to the shop. I inform the SM, who is in the lot leaving on a test ride, the motor died upon pulling in the clutch.  He tells me to park her and wait for Bere (Tech) who is also leaving on a test ride. I turn the ignition to off but the speedo is still displaying the mileage and the lights are on. I realize the motor can be started with the ignition switch in the off position. After sitting in this condition for approx. two minutes the speedo / head light turn off.  We are unable to duplicate this occurrence. The machine is hooked up to the Digital Tech. It of course says no codes / no problem. I ride her 160 miles. The motor needs more rpm to take off without hesitation and is running a little hotter but no other problems. To this day the motor can be difficult to start sometimes.

The next morning I move the bike around in the garage. I do not have a FOB on me but the system does not sound a warning. I turn the ignition to on and start the motor. The security system is not functioning.  Start the bike up. She starts right away, no issue at all. Drive her gently seating the rings. The motor is running great.

However after putting 200 miles the tachometer is not functioning properly. The tach displays my idle at 100 - 200 rpm.  Additionally the reading of the rpm’s is off the whole scale; example 6th gear at 75 mph reads 1950 rpm. I call the shop and info them of the above. SM orders a new speedo. I keep riding her as I am going on a trip to the Smoky Mountain area soon.

Upon restarting the bike, everything is working, security system and tach. I ride for an addition 400 miles with numerous stops without incident. The motor is still hesitating on takeoff but is fine under way.

Speedo / Tach: replace under warranty

I have the shop switch my S.E. 58mm TB with a  stock 50mm TB reworked by HPI to a 54mm TB.

On the way home from the shop the motor dies. No stutter, backfiring or any sign of anything amiss. I was in gear but she was not making power / ignition. All lights and electrical was still on. I pulled in the clutch and hit the start button. She turned over but it was like I had no spark or gas or something. Pull in the clutch, put her in N and try a restart while rolling, just cranks over. I pull to the side and stop. I turn the ignition switch off, wait for the two chirps from the security system, turn on ignition and she fires right up. This occurs three more times. Based on the DTCodes it is determined my MAP sensor is the culprit.

September 18, 2009 MAP sensor replaced

October 19, 2009
-BUB 7 True Dual exhaust: installed with dyno tune
-Speedo / Tach:  The mileage / trip odometers stopped displaying after hooking bike up to Dyno. All the warning / display lights work; cruise indicator, 6 speed indicator, engine warning light, etc.

October 24, 2009
-Electronic Throttle Control: While riding the motor reduced the rpm’s from 3000 to 2200 rpm and the engine warning light was on. When the throttle was released, idle was at 2000 rpm and rough. When the throttle was engaged, the motor would only make 2400 rpm and was running rough and hot.

-After turning the motor off then restarting, the engine light was no longer displaying and the ETC was functioning.

If anyone can offer me some ideas of what else to look for, I'm open to ideas. This is getting old! I have started looking for an older bike to make street worth and go backwards in technology. HELP!

I know this is gong to sound really weird but take a few minutes and check the jiffy stand interlock switch connector for water.  Open the connection - see if you can see any water and blow it out just to be sure.

Never heard of that one but I'll look it up and get it done tomorrow.

I didn't even know the new bikes had a kickstand cut out switch :nixweiss: .  Have to pay more attention.  Can't help but be reminded of a short ride back from a restaurant just out of town here about ten years ago.  One of the guys out that night had a little too much to drink and I'd ridden with another guy in a pickup.

Heluva storm came through while we were there.  Debris all over the place.  The drunk rode back in the truck and I took his rice bike home for him.  Cutting back through the country roads in the dark I knew there was debris on the road.  Then suddenly the bike just shot off.

Guy behind me on another rice bike says "you yanked off the cut out switch" or something like that.  I knew this particular bike had it but didn't want to have to find it on the side of the road in the wind and the dark with a swollen creek next to us.

We leaned it over, he held the bike, I held the flashlight and found the wires.  Switch wasn't visibly hurt but the pigtail to it was mangled.  Was just a two wire pass through so twisted the leads together and road on.  Later when the owner hooked it back up normally bike still wouldn't run though.  Switch housing was full of water on that one.  Which year did Harley add the kickstand switch?

I may be way off here but I can not find any such connector for my jiffy stand.  :nixweiss:

My SERK will take off when the clutch is let out with the kick stand down. But then again, she does whatever she wants anyway, that part of the problem.

Maybe it is not on all models. The connector is not listed in my parts manual either.

I always wondered why my dealer gave me such a good deal on my 09 SEUC.
Now I know, they left off the kickstand cutoff switch.

It's obvious we need a group buy to get the cut off switches we never had to begin with... (that made my head hurt).

If you had picked your bike up in Europe (or bought the police model) you would have gotten the interlock on the jiffy stand.

Thanks Rick

I am actually starting to give letting her go some thought. A nice red 2002 SERK or a 2004 B/B SEEG would be on my list. I don't think I'll go any newer than that for now. My old 03 Fat Boy (now my daughters who will not let me near it for some reason  :nixweiss:) has never been in for a repair. My 84 FXR has been good until my son parked her on her left side in the gravel this summer. Heck, it still ran. I drove her home shifting by hand.

Don't think it's any special training, my nickname at my old job was Pit Bull cause I never let anything go, or so I was told. I've even thought of buying a twin to this one. Now that is dumb!  :'(

Great choice Jeff!
A friend of mine just bought an 04 SEEG B&B for 13900.00.
It was immaculate.
But a red 02 is as good as they get.
