Got One...Anyone have a Weather Pack Crimp Tool to Lend?
« on: October 29, 2009, 08:29:08 AM »

Before I go out and buy one of these I though I would see if anyone has one I could borrow.

On the way to MV this year, I did not fully seat my Bushtec Connector and the trailer end dragged on the ground  :'(  :-[ ( :wall:.  It ground off one pin and half of the second one.  Ended up riding without trailer brake lights the whole trip.

Called Bushtec and got the replacement connector parts (shell, pins, seals etc.).

To do the job right, I need to crimp both the terminal and the seal.

There are several crimpers out there to do the Job including this one:
http://www.longacreracing.com/catalog/item.asp?id=1095&catid=13

This one is low priced but I don't think it does the seal:
http://www.toolsource.com/ratcheting-terminal-crimper-weatherpack-terminals-p-96175.html

And this set looks nice from the Same mfr includes the Die from the above but I am not sure it has the die for the seal ( I would not care if it was a two step process) also gives me a lot of dies for future crimps:
http://www.toolsource.com/quick-change-ratcheting-terminal-crimping-p-104701.html?sourceid=googleps

I don't think I will be doing these that often so anything above $60 seems to be a waste...but then if no one has one, I could get it and then it is available to others...

Any suggestions, concerns and help would be appreciated.

/Bill

Bill, I've got a decent open barrel crimper here.  I've never tried it with the Delco Weatherpack type seal on the terminal though.  I do have some Weatherpack kits here (somewhere) so will try a crimp later and make sure it will do what you need.  If so will get in the mail tomorrow.  Will let you know.

Thanks Don!  But don't rush to send Yet!

I am really thinking about the Kit I noted below.  It is available on E-BAY HERE and I may get it as I think the RG59 Die will do the Seal crimp.  I queried the mfr.

Just checked.  It works.  Here's the crimp.  If you're interested in another option it's a Paladin 1300 crimper body.  The correct die for the uninsulated open barrel connectors is #2033.

As these things commonly go this is a relatively inexpensive crimper.  Some are incredibly high priced.  Didn't do an exhaustive search but the die is here for about $25:

http://www.altex.com/Paladin-Die-Set-for-Open-Barrel-Crimp-Terminals-PA2033-P145685.aspx

And the crimper body at the same vendor is here for $42.00:

http://www.altex.com/Paladin-1300-Series-Crimp-Frame-Only-PA-1302-P139975.aspx

It's an easy to use very rigid little crimp tool too.  Nice heavy dies.  Will crimp wire and insulators in one pass.  I use this die all the time for Deutsch and other open barrel uses.  Far and away the most commonly used die I've got.

Here's the crimp on the Weatherpack insulator (good to know any future repairs on the Bushtec won't need anything new--thanks):

as I think the RG59 Die will do the Seal crimp.  I queried the mfr.

That would worry me a bit Bill.  I can visualize a die for RG59 making the rather unspecific crimp around the rubber insulator.  But I'd have real concern about it keeping shape for the wire crimp and do so while mainting terminal shape to make it still lock in the Weatherpack housing.  Maybe...  But I'd wonder until the moment I saw it happen.

So it did both the seal and the terminal in one pass with that Die?

Yes, what you see there was a one pass crimp.  Had to put my glasses on to make sure I had the terminal located just right (no room to spare).  But it did the deed just fine.

Just got word back from the MFR (Tool Aid / S&G) :

Quote
The 18922, Die Set which is in both the 18920 and 18960 kits is for Weather Pack terminals and crimps the bare wire that goes into the barrel on the terminal and crimps the tabs around the insulation.

Will probably go with the kit or the one Don showed since I don't like unitaskers...

Can't really go wrong have some version of a decent open barrel crimper in your tool box.  You'll use it for Deutsch, Amp, Weatherpack and just about any other connector you'll mess with on most cars and the bikes.  I've only got four dies for my crimper body but they'll cover anything I'm ever going to crimp either automotive or household.

Just received this one from the UPS guy earlier today:

Already crimped the terminal and reassembled the connector....worked great!

BTW, this is what the connector looked like after dragging on the ground:

Now going to have to look at the mountings on mine.  When not pulling the trailer always wire tie the plug itself to the bottom of the hitch.  So nothing hangs down.  But when the trailer gets pulled and that's undone the connector hangs down any time during the trip that the trailer is parked.  I'm pretty sure the harness is tied close enough the end can't reach the ground.  But I'll double check now.

Belt & Suspenders for me next trip...I will be tie-wrapping the Trailer end to the neck so that it cannot drag...and will probably tie-wrap the connector to to connector joint during trips...

Paladin 1300 crimper with 2033 die set
« Reply #14 on: May 06, 2010, 03:44:05 PM »

I have a Paladin 1300 crimper for amateur radio cables.  I use the #2033 die set for WeatherPack terminals, as shown at http://gopherbaroque.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoid=81304723http://gopherbaroque.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoid=81304723
