Stock EPA mufflers issue
« on: October 30, 2009, 01:42:13 AM »

With 10k miles i got replaced the right side muffler by warranty because inside of it there was something wrong , a kind of hearing sand moving inside when turning up and down , Nobody knows the reason , they changed it .
Now at 15k miles the dealer ordered the left side muffler because of similar noise inside like the right side muffler has had .
Checked the right side one again and the noise seems to be starting there as well again .
He wants to check with a harley expert (which will visit him because of a defected engine) .
So i did not get the supertuner on my bike yesterday .
Damn thing , second date of tuning the bike was cancelled (first was cancelled because of work at the dyno) .
Will i ever get it tuned , hmmm .
Good thing is : From November till March they give a 15% discount on all mechanic works at the dealer . Small comfort .  :2vrolijk_21:

Could you tell if there was a muffler fault before it was removed from the bike to make the sand clock test?

I don`t know because it was the first time the muffler was taken away and then i realized , but the dealer does not trust in this strange "muffler sand clock sound" ( what a describtion ) .
When we would know about the influence to the muffler flow , but we do not know .
If there won`t be an influence depending on the flow then all would be good for us and the tuning could start .
But checking those issues can take a long time , dealer-german headquarter-USA-and back ....
Let`s wait and see .

HJ, Ive never handled a european muffler but its very common on Standard CVO mufflers for the packing to loosen up, if you tilt the muffler it will slide back and forth and make a sound similar to what your describing, the packing is contained inside a wire screen so it has no effect on the operation. Ill try and take a picture for you later.

Yeah , that`s like my mufflers sound now , and my guess is that there is no influence to the flow , but the technical master from the dealer wants to know this for sure and therefore he wants to get a feedback and two new mufflers from the MoCo before tuning.
A explosion picture of the EPA mufflers right and left would be very helpful , to see how it is build inside , but there is no available , even the dealer has none .

Here is a picture of the 2009 SERG muffler with the baffle removed.  You can look at the rest of the thread here:

Check the cat in the header. make sure it is intact. Iv'e seen cats self destruct and spit out pieces when overheated by lead or other contaminants. I had a Pontiac Trans Am that plugged the muffler tight with cat and stop the engine. :nixweiss:

Cat is removed totally from the header .
And the muffler (EPA) looks completely different than the US-version , you cannot compare them in , no way .

My new stock mufflers arrived and i just came back from a damn rainy ride to my dealer to bring him the bike .
Tomorrow he finally will do the Supertuner and the dyno.
He said that he will have to drill a little hole in every head pipe (before the header) for the emission-sensors for the dyno runs and have to weld a screw-mother on each.
When riding to my dealer , i pushed the "speaker" switch the first time , just to look what will happen , the speakers were turned off, then i pushed again to turn them on again and what happened :
The whole switch was falling down inside , holy cow i thought , stopped and turned the speakers back on by fingering into the little switch-hole , the dealer laughed and he will repair it .
Hmmm , should i buy a new one , the "old" bike is breaking together , so it seems , hmmmm .
The dealer gave me a XR1200 to ride home (it was raining) , damn fuc.....ing fairingless bike when you have such weather .
Tomorrow i will pick up my dynoed silver-ghost , finally , this is the third try to do it .
I hope it is worth it , i am very curious about the difference before and after dyno - i am looking forward tomorrow YEAH .

I wonder why the header pipes are tapped into for the Dyno. Usually the sampler goes into the exit of the muffler and your O2 sensors are removed so the dyno's O2's and supporting hardware can do its job during the session. Must be a different method of sampling you guy's on the other side of the pond use?  :drink:

My tuner (Jarz's Performance) uses the same method.  Sticking the probe up the pipe gives a blended sample, this way each cylinder is tuned seperately.

That`s what he said , every cylinder will be seperately tuned , and he just came back from a MoCo workshop , especially for official dealer`s technicians last week , where they  only did the tuning details.
He also said that they tested different tuning methods , with and without the sensors and with individual mapping or sending the results to harley and get back a map and so on , but they found out that this (what he will do now) would have shown the best result. ( I hope he is right).
