Help with double stick tape
« on: November 08, 2009, 06:06:46 PM »

My tour pack organizers are letting loose and coming un-stuck.  What is a good industrial strength double stick tape that will hold these things in place. Both in the tour pack and the side bags.  Or any other suggestions. Thanks

I've had good success with Scotch/3M Exterior Mounting Double Sided Tape.  It's industrial quality and weather resistant.  The Scotch item number is 4011T.  Last time I needed some I found it at Wally World.  This stuff holds the heavy ballasts for the HID lighting inside my fairing.  I'm not sure I could remove them if I wanted to.  :huepfenlol2:

Ride safe,

Agree with HDbagger. The 3m 4011T has worked for me on numerous applications.  There are a few surfaces where it doesn't work as well but it works 99% of the time. Keep a few rolls of it in the garage at all times. Have also used the 3M doublestick adhesive. It's not a tape but kind of a goo between two treated paper surfaces. Have used it on the HD coins on my bike. Places where the 4011T is too thick. Sticks great but can be frustrating to cut and work with if it is warm. It gets all balled up and you have to start again. 3m Makes great adhesives. Check out their page here and you should be able to find a tape for your application.

Great 3M site, but they don't have a listing for the 4011T tape. Is it under another number?

It's under the Adhesive Transfer & Double Coated Tapes Section under VHB (Very High Bonding)

Mark, I've never seen the 4011 tape in wider than 1".  It's great stuff for small items.  But something as wide as a tour pak or saddlebag liner I've always had doubts about its use on.  Have you ever seen 4011 in wider widths?

Try this link.  3M site is a little strange, you need to go to the "Scotch" brand site to find the 4011 mounting tape.

http://www.scotchbrand.com/wps/portal/3M/en_US/ScotchBrand/Scotch/Products/ProductCatalog/?PC_7_RJH9U52300LM30I87QR3ES18H7_nid=88BP3QJCQLgsTF1RRQ4PQRglBBM9D4MMLWbl

I've used this stuff to mount the document pouch to the interior of the lid of my chopped tour-pak, also mounted straps in one of the saddlebags to secure tool bag and air pump for shocks, and I also used it to mount the pigtail connector for the battery tender to the sheet metal plate in front of the battery.  Stuff works great, just make sure you clean all surfaces well with alcohol first.  BTW, this is the same stuff that is used on some automotive moldings and nameplates.  You can usually find it in auto parts stores or places like True Value or Sears Hardware.

I've had the same kinda problem.  Another solution is heavy duty velcro with the sticky backing.  Worked for me :2vrolijk_21:

Twolane, on the 3M site they say it comes in a 3" width. Not sure if that would be a great improvement. I frequently lay down a few 1" widths side by side for larger items. That stuff has a lot of bite.

3m also makes an adhesive promoter , it is so good it will make the tape stick to your fingers, once it touches though it will be stuck!!
