Tires being put on wrong by Harley Davidson
« on: November 10, 2009, 08:40:59 AM »

Has anyone had this issue......start calling around to your dealerships...This is what we have found.  HD has been putting tires on backwards even though the arrow is showing it is going in the right direction.  One dealership in N/W Ohio had this problem on all of their inventory except for one bike.

If the arrow is showing the correct rotation, then they didn't install the tire backward.  Most likely you are referring to the change Harley and Dunlop made to the tread pattern on the D407F, and that has been thoroughly cussed/discussed here.  Try a search for D407.

After 8000 miles harley replaced my fron tire. Now at 17,000 mile the tire is cupped again. I'll see what the dealer will do next week.

You will likely find that if you had a front tire installed in 2008, when it comes time to replace it with a new Dunlop 407, the tread will be reversed. The 2008 tire will have the arrow in one direction and the 2009 tire will have it in the opposite direction.

Dunlop tried to convince the MoCo to reverse the tire direction (opposite of the rear wheel) for wearing reasons and the MoCo thought it would be confusing to customers.

Lo and behold a year later, those customers with 2008 Dunlops are now experiencing wear issues and the MoCo has quietly reversed the direction of the front tire (per Dunlops original recommendation).

The front tire on my 2010 SEUC has the tread in the exact opposite direction of my brother's 2009 Ultra. Both tires have the arrow in the correct direction even though the treads are reversed.

My guess is that when my brother goes to replace the front tire on his 2009 bike, the tread will be reversed (to match mine) and the arrow will still be in the correct direction....Go figure!

They don't know WTH to do with those damn 18" tires! On the SERK 3/4's, the F D407 Radial P/N 41999-07 was superseded by the D408 Radial P/N 41999-07B! You think they got it right yet? I don't!!! ;)

You know Harley replaced my tire with 14,000 miles on it. As far as I am concerned they can continue to replace mine for free........I can play this game for a long time at there expense..... Just saying   :nixweiss:

For those of you with a 2009 Touring bike, you'll want to check out this thread http://hdforums.com/forum/touring-models/444012-2009-front-tire-wear.html

and this recall notice on the front tires http://www.box.net/shared/lxlymxvuz2

Howie,
This may be a dumb question, but have you ever thought about getting rid of the radials and go with a standard bias-ply tire for your SERK?  :nixweiss: I've got 18" bias-plys on the SESG and they ride very well.

Yep Charlie, but they don't make a bias ply REAR tire for us in the equivalent 170/60R-17 SERK3/4 size, with matching front, in any brand! And I wasn't interested in changing wheels or getting a wider tire to fit. ;)

Interesting that they don't make the rear tire.  I don't blame you for not wanting to switch out wheels or going wider...I'd probably not either.
