Duel Oil Coolers
« on: November 13, 2009, 10:09:32 AM »

In my attempt to lower engine oil temps I have tried a few differant add on coolers along with a PCV tuner. What I have found out that to use any additional cooler with the HD SE Cooler stock on 09 touring 110" CVO bikes is that if run in series it will tax the oil pump and can create sumping. Run in parole the the oil temps change very little and in MHO its a waste of money. I have not tried the Jag offset adaptor with Duel coolers so no comment on them. I have tried the Jag 10 row vertical cooler in series with the stock 09 cooler and also using the Engine guard in series and in parole that temps changed very little. In series with any two ways there is a hint of oil pump taxing that IMO leads to sumping. I have went back to stock to find the bike does run better and the temps are only slight higher about 5* in 80* outside temps. A lot of time went into tuning and oil cooler changes only to come back to stock set up. IMO the stock CVO cooler works well.   Doc..

BTW ! The lowest oil temps I reached was with the engine guard and the stock cooler in parrale but seemed to tax the pump. And slowed the bike down.   Doc.

Thanks for the info!  One thing I did to cool down my 124" was to install the Baker +1 oil pan.  Cooled it about 10 degrees

Be curious to see if there is pinging occuring (a SEST or TTS even not married to the bike could be used to determine) also what are the AFRs, actuals as measured out the pipe near the head.
What is the temp range you are experiencing?

Don have not noticed any pinging and do not have the AFRs for the stock set up I have now in the bike. I have been doing a few changes and temps I see with the stock cooler with outside temps in the low 80* and 60% humidity are running just around 240* running at 75 to 80 MPH 2 up riding.   Doc

I would agree
240 is acceptable. If you have the SE255 cam the motor can be cooled down and performance enhanced with a cam change and a good tune with a Closed Loop Bias change.

I'm finding the same oil temps at the same conditions as yours, except out humidity is a lot lower.
Oil temp will bump 260 in stop and go conditions.
This is with the 2010 103. My older 113 runs a lot cooler!!! Better cams for one thing!!!

If it is a stock download consider IEDs from nightrider.com They will richen the mixture a  few tenths in closed loop. You will be surprised the differance and mileage will barely drop. Next a cam change.

Don !   You must have missed that part were I stated I have a Power Commander 5 so I am not in closed loop. With temps droping a little here in FL. so is my oil temp, rode yesterday and temps never got over 240* with out side temps in the upper 70s.  Doc

I guess I did
Just set you AFR targets to 14/1 up to 40% throttle.

I'm trying those out right now, seems to work ok, but, I need some 80 degree weather to give 'em a real test. I like these fans because you can't really see them.
The company contacted me and recommended to leave them "on" once the oil temps get to 220 or so. They SHOULD keep the temps from going higher.
I'll know more on Sunday, going to the desert to get some heat! Got a "regular" SERG along to compare temps, I'll take my IR thermometer along also.
