Friday The 13th, Port Dover Ontario
« on: November 13, 2009, 11:10:41 PM »

Police are just opening Main Street in Port Dover after closing it for the last couple of hours due to the crushing crowds that descended today for Friday the 13th celebrations.  Norfolk County Constable Kari Lee estimates the crowd reached as high as 15,000, before many bikers headed out of town late this afternoon.  Port Dover is a small Fishing town on the shores of Lake Erie,  population is almost 6000 full time residents, but every Friday the 13th Bikers flock to this town from all over.  The real test will come in August 2010, the next Friday the 13th. Previous events held in August have drawn crowds estimated at 150,000 people.

Chris Simons founded the Friday the 13th rallies in 1981. A group of friends met at a hotel in Port Dover on a Friday the 13th of that year and had such a good time that Simons suggested they do it again the following Friday the 13th. (As with 2009, there were Friday the 13ths in February, March and November of 1981.) Word of the upcoming party got around, and ever afterward heading to Port Dover became the thing to do for motorcycle enthusiasts on this allegedy unlucky day.  The Friday the 13th rally in June of last year drew more than 120,000 people and more than 10,000 motorcycles.

Ontario's lenient nudity laws make Friday the 13th very interesting in the warmer months.
