New to the CVO family, maybe!
« on: November 16, 2009, 01:54:06 PM »

Hey!

I am new here and have only been riding HD for a year. I have a 09 RK I am thinking of trading in on a 10 CVO Softail Convertible. I bought the RK thinking I would do alot more long distance riding but as it turns out my longest rides end up around 2 hours. Most of my riding is around town and country back roads, so I am thinking the Convertible may be a better ride for me.

I have an appointment to look at one in the morning and make the decision. Can anyone that owns one tell me a little more about the bike, like how it rides, are they happy with it, does it run hot or anything that comes to mind?

Thanks in advance.

Haven't tried the convertible yet. I have found the softail line not to my liking. The suspension bottoms out too much, drags parts to soon in corners. I think you would be better off keeping the King or looking at the SE Street Glide. JMHO

Welcome to the site.

I went from a softail to touring model and haven't looked back. I'm not trying to influence your decision, I just don't have any input on the convertible.

Once you're on a touring model, everything else is back down hill. :nixweiss:    I mean the ride isn't going to be what you've become used to and neither will the handling.

If you're just wanting into a CVO then I'd suggest the SE Street Glide.  Take one for a ride and you'll not look back. :2vrolijk_21:

By the way........welcome to the board.

I too went from a 09 Softail Nighttrain to a 08 Electraglide Police and traded both for my 10 SEUC.

I never looked back. Better ride, handeling, more comfortable, storage,..... must I go on...

Welcome to the board!

I've had a 2008 CVO Road King (awesome) and a 2009 CVO Softail Springer (awesome looking).  If I had to choose between the two, I'd always pick the Road King.  Especially a 2009 or 2010 model as it has the upgraded touring frame (but even the "old" touring frame is more comfortable than the Softail).  Nothing against the Softail - it is a fun bike, but definitely suited for smaller riders and very short trips.  With the stock seat on the Softail, any ride longer than 30 minutes starts becoming uncomfortable.  And yes, the suspension does tend to bottom more than the touring bike does.
My rides are also mostly around town and some country-type roads and almost all less than 2 hours - I always preferred the Road King for everything except real short trips (riding to work, etc.)
The final decision is yours, but it is one you'll have to live with.  If possible, take a test ride (most likely they won't let you take the Convertible, but there are comparable models).  Good luck!

I feel like a Salmon going up stream here but I had a Softail Custom (most likely different then the convertable) and LOVED the ride.  Mustang solo, extended the foot controls out as far as I could, buckhorn bars and your typical chit.  I rode a lot, Sturgis, Grand Canyon, Indiana etc from Seattle.  I'm 6' 2" and back then weighed about 185/190.  Now I ride the 10 SECU, of course I weigh a tad more, 215, and find the SECU exceptionally rideable and will always be my choice as my primary ride.   My point:  any bike that fits you, is a good one.  I'm thinking of getting another FXSTC just to trick out again.............

Hey Newdep.
Welcome aboard.
I have to agree with the folks who might see this as a step back. Even if the softail is a CVO.
So----What did you decide ??
In any event.. Please feel free to stay on the board.

I traded my 09 street glide for the 2010 CVO convertible and glad I did.  The glide was a little tall for me even though it is lowered. I am 6' tall but with a 31.5 inseam. Never felt sure footed even after changing the seat. The glide also had bad wind buffeting that would give me killer headaches and red eyes after long rides at highway speeds, even though I tried 5 windshields. The only one that worked was the full size one but don't want to look though it.
Riding the convertible reminds me of riding my chopper again. Feel like i,m in the bike and very sure footed. Added engine guard, pegs and the king low windshield. It is just as comfortable as the glide with maybe being a little harder on big bumps in the road. This bike is also an attention getter. People always telling me how beautiful she is. Being able to have a hotrod bike and change to a touring bike in about a minute is awesome. By the way it is the orange and black one. I also installed the screamin eagle exhaust and xied. Big change in power of the bike. Will get some pictures up soon. ;D

I like the soft tail line.  I kept my Fatboy for that reason when I got the CVO road Glide.  You can tour on them too.  My wife has 26xxx miles on her ten month old Heritage Soft tail and had done 750 mild days with me.
