Charging system--what output
« on: December 28, 2005, 05:33:58 PM »

After having added the HawgWired amplifier system and picking up a Gerbing gloves and jacket liner recently; on top of the heated seat and a few extra lights I started to do the charging system mathematics.

Hey Don,
The H-D 2006 new model tech forum inference was that they ('06's) were 'upped' to "New High Output 50 Amp Charging System", so that implies that 2005's were less. Not an exact answer  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif], but I'll see if I have a hard copy '05-'06comparison sheet at home.

TwoLane-Even though I do not know the 05 output, just reading thru the extra accessories you have added, you are a prime candidate for a charging upgrade (especially if the alternator is under the primary).  Your old alternator will thank you for it..   :)

You can do math til your blue in the face, just put all the stuff on, crank it all up (seats, heated gear, stereo........) and sit there with a good voltmeter at idle and see what ya got....13.5V or better and you'll be fine....much less and you'll wanna look at kickin up to atleast what the '06 has.  On mine, 2 sets of heated gear (from tippy toes to finger tips), heated seat, heated grips, stereo cranked and all the lights on (stock lighting only, highbeam and lowbeam light simultaneously on the '06 when high is on) I'm still well over 14V at idle.

Don,
I'm 98% sure you have the hi-output alternator (45 amp) rather than the standard 38 amp. Even the '03 SERKS have 45 amp rated alternators, and the jump in 2006 was up to 50 Amps. Gotta sell more of those P&A electronics!! The rating should be the same for stator and rotor, but there is apparently a 18-20% hedge on the side of the stator. One's a rotating field the other is stationary, the stator is generally more robust. At least that's what I recall from my student days in

Yah Hoooooo !!!!  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] Those current carrying gremlins were at it again. [smiley=jalapeno.gif] Glad you found it without tearing the regulator and alternator apart.

Glad ya found a problem Twolane, these things can bug ya.  Alot easier than fixing a new stator/rotor.  Had I seen the 45amp info, I'd of been pushin to find a problem too, you shouldn't have been near the edge with that kinda output.

Twolane the stock 04&05 have a 38amp alt,  you can upgrade to the 45amp unit I did it because of all the heated clothing we where.  Great time to do it when doing the inner primary.

That must be my 2% margin of error in saying they should be 45Amp. I double checked my parts book yesterday and my '03 SERK has 45 Amp system, as listed in the SERK supplemental parts book, the standard RK has the 38 Amp and the standard parts book shows both the 38 & 45 Amp part numbers. Strange that '04-'05 SE's only come with 38 Amp. I'd always thought the SE's came with the higher rated system across the board. [smiley=nixweiss.gif]
