Garmin/Harley GPS units
« on: December 28, 2005, 06:18:30 PM »

I have two of the 2005 FLHTCSE2 yellow bikes (one in AZ and the other in IN) and installed the $800 plus installation Harley GPS unit on both bikes. I am still awaiting a fully functional unit.

I replaced, at my own expense, the removeable cradle and that has corrected all of my problems.

Using the unit in any of my 4-wheeled veicles has always been good.

For what's it worth, here's what I've learned on all-terrain vehciles and motorcycle GPS power issues. The most common problem is "vibration induced shutdown". Most newer Garmin GPSs have a chip running inside (Intel 386 or ARM) which can get confused and shutdown, or freeze up, if the 12V power supply is not smooth and steady. If the GPS is hardwired to the 12VDC supply and you are still getting shutdown, try these things:

Eliminate any possible source of disconnection under vibration. No spring-type fuses, use a blade-type. Tap directly into the 12vDC supply if possible. If using a cigarette lighter socket on the bike, that connection is a likely source of the disconnection. Use tape or clamp to immobilize it. Use dielectric grease on the all contacts and connections. Especially if using the spring-type fuse holder inside the Garmin cigarette lighter adapter. Take the fuse out and put dielectric grease on every little part in the power path. Sparking can contaminate the connection points. Once you've contaminated the metal coatings on the terminals (or sanded it off), the contamination gets worse. I'm not familiar enough with the H-D (Garmin OEM) interconnects, but it sounds like a vibration shutdown type of deal.
I've run the Garmins with HDD (2620) and isolated the mounting some along with trying to reduce the connections to the minimum. So far it's been pretty good aside from when idling or low speeds and the associated voltage drop kicks in.
Good luck !!

That said, I use a Garmin 276C and have had 0 problems. I have it hardwired into the fairing but frequently use it on battery power only. this unit bounces (sometime literally) between my truck, bike, little boat, fire trucks and on any other form of transportation I might be using at the time.

I don't understand why the Harley labeled unit is so finicky, it still is a Garmin which are fairly reliable units.

Has anybody had experience with the Tom Tom 700? I'm planning to buy a GPS system and want to make sure I get the right one that will be easily utilized while riding at 75 mph in the open air. I know the Tom Tom is very popular in Europe.

I don't have one but would not buy one just because of their annoying commercials commercials.

I have the Garmin 2620 with the RAM ball mount system. I have logged 5000+ miles with it on my bike. Every condition (hot, cold, fast 100+, slow) and no problems to report. For what its worth I just updated the maps via the Garmin website and it was fairly easy to do.
