2009 Warranty Service
« on: November 25, 2009, 10:27:39 PM »

I read on this site that there is a Service Bulletin out on the ABS brakes for the 2009s so I scooted on down to the dealer to get the work done.  While there I asked about any warranties on the front tire as my 10,800 mile SEUC was shipped with the original tire tread on the front tire which is prone to cupping and mine had started to cup.  If you check out the 2010s the front tire tread is reversed which supposedly solves this problem.

They checked the Service Bulletin on the tire and swapped my 10,800 mile front tire out under warranty.  I about fell over as I had just finished a discussion with the Service Writer about the fact, when he asked me where I serviced my bike, that I don't have work done by shops using "book time".  My local excellent shop uses actual time.

Bottom line, if your '09 front tire starts to cup, run in and have it checked and warranteed.  There may be conditions but if you can get a free new tire, do it.  Tire and labor was $255.49 on my swap.  Good luck.

I'm confused about what you said.  It cost you $255.49 to have your tire replaced under warranty?  Is that what I'm reading?  Although mine was cupping, I didn't have a shot at warranty replacement, since I got a nail in mine and had to replace it.  I paid $249 for tire and labor to replace mine with the new version...reversed tread...and that wasn't under warranty.  According to the tire warranty, they prorate based on tread wear, and you should have paid a lot less than my outright purchase and installation of the same tire.

Sorry about the confusion, 1abastarsmda.  I paid nothing, but the invoice they gave me was for the amount stated, so I assume they billed the MoCo that amount.   They did not prorate it as I thought they might but just swapped it out, no questions asked.  I did get the 2010 tire with reverse tread.  I hope it works without cupping.

I wanted others to know about this so 2009 owners could take advantage of the warranty.

Okay, that makes more sense now.  Actually, someone recently told me that if you had your front tire replaced at a prior date, that the MOCO is will still pay for the tire if you can produce the receipt.  Does anyone know if there is any truth to this or just another contrived rumor?

So all this leads me to ask, "Does this cupping problem happen on the rear tire, and if so, have the treads changed on the 2010 models?"  I have not looked at rear tires on the new ultras and haven't heard about any rear wheel cupping problems.

Has anyone else?

Thanks Dave.  I don't think my service order mentions the cupping or anything else other than they replaced the tire.  I'll have to dig it out.

I got a little over 11,000 on the first rear, and I have 12,000 on the 2nd one with some tread left, and I haven't really had any rear tire cupping problems that I've noticed.

Thanks Dave.  I had to call HD Customer Service myself, since my local dealer wanted me to contact the dealer in NC to take care of this.  The guy in Customer Service even got a good laugh out of that one and he called the dealer and straightened them out.  They are going to take care of me on that tire...BUT, you're still not getting half!  The next time I see you, I will take care of a few rounds of beer though (as long as there are no Krystal Burgers involved).
