Sound of Pipes ... Driving Me Nuts ?
« on: December 04, 2009, 06:12:21 PM »

Gents:

Dumb question I know but its killing me.   I hvae the V&H Monster Ovals on my 07 Screaming Eagle Road King.  Just last week it was 80 + degrees, smooth, deep, throaty sound were coming out ... fully enjoying it.   In comes cold weather and all of a sudden it sounds like pipes are 2X as loud  and more of a rap rap rap bark versus smooth deep rumble.

Bike is tuned by professional, well taken care of, only 7,000 miles.  Is that possible ?   Is it possible to have different sounds in cold versus warm weather ?

Am I hearing things ?

Possibly lower humidity with the colder temps.  Lower humidity equals more air getting which would lean the mixture out a bit.  Nothing to get excited about  - not a great deal leaner but could be the reason for the change in sound.

Shouldn't more air trigger more fuel to make the bike run better?? That's why on cool evenings the bike always seems like it has ooomph. The exhaust would get a bit louder with the extra fuel burning as well. Just my $.02

I thought the ECM would make minor adjustments for air density and temp etc???

That's why I think it would have added more fuel to adjust for the additonal air.

Nope, the bikes LOVE that cooler denser air! The ECM only does so much. That's why you have tuning devices. But you didn't tune in the colder denser air, so you'll lean out a lil and make more power. No worries about the heat as it's colder out anyway. Win-win situation! I love riding in cool weather. The bike's so much snappier!!! :2vrolijk_21:

I don't think (but I don't really know) that the ECM can "adjust" itself based upon humidity / temp.  Not sure a PC / Race Tuner can either.  Mine runs "better" when its cool also and I know the humidity in FL is lower during the cooler months.  Going back to my tuning Motocross bikes, we would richen the carb when it was cool (and dry) and lean it a bit when it was hot and humid.  Cool dry conditions led to more air getting in making it necessary to richen the mixture.  Without changing the jets (larger) it would run leaner.  They ran great leaned out but not for long!!

Two Wheels, Sometimes If you switch helmets the things hear will be amplified. When I switch from a non face shield to a helmet with a face shield I will hear more valve train noise etc. Just a thought. CAHDBIKER
