What's in your Backpack?
« on: December 08, 2009, 10:24:45 PM »

I retired out of the Army about 2 and half years ago.  Spent a lot of time in Iraq since 2001, also spent 9 months there back in Desert Storm.

We'd spend a lot of time moving around and living out of what we'd call a "3 day bag" since we were mainly pilot's we would only spend up to say a week out from the FSB (Forward Support Base).

It was always a hoot to see what people would think that is absolutely necessary to have in their bags, and what you'd see them pull out.

We didn't carry rucks because we didn't have to stay out of the wire that long.  That said;

If you were to leave the house today with a "3 day bag" for the purposes of this discussion, it would be a bag that you could easily put on your back or carry by it's handle. It would be a bag that if you had to abandon your bike or car, you would grab the PC (Precious Cargo...wife or girlfriend) and that bag, quickly, and have what you need for the afternoon or a day or two.

It has to be of a weight that can be carried for some distance.

I have lots of ideas but I will wait to throw them out as the bag builds.

It's obvious that a cold weather bag would be different than a warm weather bag, you may delineate between the two.

example; you don't need mechanics tools, you're leaving your machine, but a Gerber tool or the likes would be important.

What's in YOUR bag?

That would take up a lot of room...but I loves me some coffee. GPS is good, that would have slipped by me.

I would throw in some small bungee cords and possibly some sort of cover from the sun.

I would have thought this would have generated a bit more responses...

Chem light sticks, a few
hand warmers (Chemical type)
bug spray/repellent
1 or two MRE's (meals ready to eat)
Surefire flash light
cell phone charger

GPS (thanks, new addition because of this list)
Change of Socks, Underwear
Dry Food (granola bars, trail mix, etc)
Bottled Water
O-Light M20
Emergency Radio (AM/FM/Weather with lithium batteries - very light weight, wife bought last year)
Multi Tool
Folding utinsel set
$100 in small bills
Packable waterproof windbreaker
9mm Semi-auto in holster with 3 magazines

This sits in my front closet, with most items already in it - have to add the O-Light and GPS which would fall readily to hand.

This is the same Back Pack I throw in the back of the car or truck even if you travel 25 miles to work. I drive down I-24 late at night with little traffic. If the roads are slick you make a mistake due to an idiot driver or deer, you may find yourself out in the cold waiting for a wrecker or help.

If your PC is with you then you'd want her as comfortable as possible while you deal with the situation. I've driven north into Illionios several times with high winds and lots of snow. I was on major roads in the daytime and drive for at least several minutes without passing another car.

Again, that's why I started this thread. I can't think of everything but you've given me several ideas that I either forgot or didn't think of.

Packing for a trip with clothes and such is not the same thing as this.  This is a survival bag! That is ready to go all the time and everyone should have one.

Two days before a trip is not the time to be thinking of what to put in it.

Just my two cents.

I looked at the MSR brand and the Brunton Brand, ultimately I chose the Brunton becuase that is all the store had in stock and I was in a hurry (had a week long field problem the following week in below freezing temps).  But the army times gave the MSR brand real good ratings, however, the brunton vapor stove burns any type of fuel including alcohol and gasses.  The MSR multi-fuel stove only burns liquid fuels.

I found a bunch of good info in this old closed thread from 2008, but it had some good stories in it as well as some good ideas. Most of these guys are civilian hikers/campers, but I think they pretty much met the intent.
