TMax doesn't see the O2 sensors
« on: December 09, 2009, 10:57:50 PM »

I ran the Thundermax and the Bub true dual with crossover system until I got the recall and had the 4th rebuild on my '07. Changed back to stock to keep from having any questions asked for the warranty work.
I have run the stock setup for a few thousand miles and decided to put the TMax back with a set of Fullsac baffled mufflers and the OEM header. (BUB was way loud for me).
Problem: TMax doesn't see the O2 sensors now that I have reinstalled. Complete unit has been sent back to Zippers and tested out OK. They did replace the ECM "just because". Sensors were tested as OK but they won't show up when I link up to the unit.
Any ideas??
Thanks for any ideas/help you might have.

Do you have the closed loop box checked in the closed loop module settings?

Closed loop boxes are checked. All connections are secure. When I go to monitor it shows a message that O2 sensors are not seen and asks if open loop should be entered. Staying in closed loop motor starts and runs but sensor values never change.
Is there a way to test the sensors off the bike? Can't believe they went south on the shelf but test wouldn't hurt. Can't do the test through the monitor process as the module doesn't find them.

If you decide to buy a sensor to check them by replacement don't pay the gawdawful inflated price that Zippers will try to hang it in you with.  Search for a Bosch 17014 sensor.  Should be able to score something for $50 or so.

Just looked.  Here's one through Amazon for $48.99.

Thanks Twolanerider,
I had done a little research last night but hadn't found that one yet. Would like to test these if there is a way to do that without spending the $$ for a brand new that may or may not solve the issue. May just have to bend over and try a new one to see.
I saw a thread on a different forum suggesting the sensors were Lamda sensor. The Bosch sure looks right to me.

That part number came from Kitzmiller at Zippers.  He didn't really want to give it up.  They like selling with their embarassing and egregious markup way too much to do such things.

I highly doubt it's the sensors unless they were drenched in penetrating oil or something silly like that.

Well, after checking, rechecking and checking one more time all the connections I gave up and took the Thundermax off and gave up. Just couldn't believe that both sensors would have gone bad sitting in a box on the shelf. While packaging it back up I got to thinking that I just wasn't going to let this thing beat me and it was to late to call Zippers. Sooo, I started reinstalling the unit while checking and cleaning every connection. Once reinstalled and inialized I fired up the laptop and linked to the module. VOILA!!!!! Both sensors showed up and did their climb to 19.36! Bike started, settled in and ran just fine.
What was it? Danged if I know but I'm happy.   :huepfenjump3:

Just an FYI, from what Zippers has said it wouldn't take a failure of both sensors.  If either fails the mode is supposed to shut down.
