2003 SERK - What Gear Drive Cam to Use?
« on: January 04, 2006, 12:28:38 AM »

Engine is all original 103 CVO.  Want to get chain drive cams out BAD!  But don't want to spend a lot of money.  Saw one post where guy used S&S 510G cams.  But I hate giving up 0.020 lift.  Looks like S&S has a 546G cam set.  Sounds real close to bolt-in for the 103 CVO.  Anyone installed these?  Does the extra 0.016 lift cause a problem with clearances between piston and valves?  Any spring changes needed?  Where would I get a map for these?

Freedom Cycles might have something worth looking at, but they told me they only install them, themselves, that they don't sell them for you to install yourself.  Not all of us live near them so that we can take our bikes there, or would prefer to do the work ourselves.  So, IMO, that option is not viable for most people.
I too, am waiting to see what Zipper's comes up with but I also don't want to be doing this in Feb or March, so I may have to go with another cam just due to the timing of the release of the Zipper's package.  I'm not trying to put anyone down here, just stating facts, as I see them.
What's a viable alternative for just a switch to gear drives and possibly no head work?  I've found a few suggestions from cam manufacturers and builders, and right now I'm leaning toward an Andrews TW26G, but also looking at a Crane HTC-310-2 or possibly a Red Shift 557TC, but I think it might require head removal for spring work or clearancing the pistons.
Any suggestions for gear drive cams only?  Preferably bolt-in's?

Hopefully, the Zipper's package will be available in time for installing yet this winter, but I also need to look into other possibilities, just in case.

Jerry:
The Red Shift 557TC would probably be my preference if it would be a bolt in as I think it's spec's look pretty good on paper also.  I'm not experienced with cams and TC engines so I'm just guessing on this from everything I can read about cams and how they perform.
Maybe someone will tell me my guess is pretty good----- or maybe they'll tell me to stick to farming!

Yeah, 'er 'uh, kenjack2,
I can't speak intelligently about the Andrews Cams.  OTIS can.  I'm sure he will comment later, today.  Later--HUBBARD

KenJack;
Give Brad at Freedom cycles a call 775-358-3500. As skippy stated they have a cam that was made by Andrews to his specs specifically for the 103. Brad did tell me that he would send me the cam for install if I was interested. I am awaiting the reports on the Zippers cams before making my decision.

One of the things I've been considering after looking at the various gear drive cams currently available is the Red Shift 557TC.

grc:
Would you happen to have any other spec's on the SE253 cam such as overlap, lobe centers, and separation angle?  I have these specs for the other two cams but haven't been able to find them for the SE253.
Thanks,
Steve

Seem to remember Shrader having specs on this cam from some 04 internal document.  He'd made notes or something.  Since he's logged back on again recently perhaps he'll see this and be able to again find the data.
