How to remove the handlebar controls ?
« on: January 01, 2010, 04:00:34 PM »

When i change the handlebar i have to remove the hand controls .
Does somebody have pictures of this job or a simple guide for me in easy words ?
And the most important "have to be careful" points ?

I did this when I changed my bars.
Step 1 buy a service manual w/wiring diagram
Step 2 remove outer fairing, take pics of routing of wiring
Step 3 remove instrument nacelle, take more pics.
Step 4 sit down, have a coffee and ask yourself-Do I want to do this?
If you answered yes-
Follow instructions in service manual

If no-
Phone the dealership to sent the rescue wagon.

It is not hard but does take patience to disconnect wiring plugs and pull wires thru bars.
The color tracing is a son of a gun to see and some traces are similar-good vision required.
I removed the fuel tank so there wasn't any "oh sh$t" to happen and it does give more room to work around
Good luck :2vrolijk_21:
Disregard the heavy duty bar clamp, I am running custom 1.25 bars and this was necessary for my install.

for the switch wires, i made a diagram/picture listing all the colors and showed their position on the plug.
i also used a cheep paper labeler to label the wires going to their respective gauges. used this to label the wires to my gps and heated grips also.

it's not that hard of a project, i've done it 3 times now.

It's not a hard job. Just take your time. I assume your not riding much anyway. So save some Euro's and have fun doing the swap.
Just make yourself a good diagram of the wiring and you will be ok.

Thank you for the clamp-info , did not know that .
On the pic above i can see the disconnect of the brake-line and i am not able to do this ( have not the tools and the vac and the experience ) or is the disconnection of the brake and clutch line not necessary ?

No need to disconnect Brake or Clutch Line that is if you select a bar that does not require longer lines. It might be required to re route clutch line. It is easy to bleed the clutch. You may only need to reposition fittings, this can be done by loosening just enough to rotate this will not let air in.

Aaah , good info , that`s what i thought first how to do it .
So loosening the handcontrols and move them out off the handlebar would be enough .
( After disconnecting the wires , after exactly writing down where the wires have been located originally )
No removing of the gastank is needed i guess .

You also need to put a piece of cardboard or tie strap in the front brake lever to keep from breaking the front stop light switch.  A service manual is also a great help.

Asking at wild1 about the need of this clamp and they denied it , this clamp only would be needed at bikes older than 2007 .
Now i did not order the clamp but i did order the wild1 10" mini-ape .

Did you use this special clamp for mounting your wild1 10" Mini-Ape ?
