FLHTCUSE and gas mileage
« on: January 09, 2006, 09:47:42 AM »

Hi folks,
I was wondering what kind of gas mileage you are getting?
I just filled up for the first time breaking in my FLHTCUSE and I think it's getting 26mpg. I am guessing that the dealership may not have filled the tank all the way and the gas gauge was inaccurate in saying full. I gassed it up when the low fuel light came on -gas gauge said 1/8 -1/4 tank and it took 4.3 gals.
Maybe I had it idleing in driveway or parking lot showing it off some too. ;D
I have not modified the engine, air cleaner or exhaust.
Is this correct mileage for a stock 103" 2006 FLHTCUSE or will it improve with break-in?

I have not checked mine but seems a little low with no mods.  It has been said on this site a time or two hundred that the gages are not accurate.

Va, I don't think I'd put too much stock in the MPG on that first tank there.  You should get into the mid-30s fairly easily if you're out on the road at all with the thing.  See what you get with this tank where you know it was full and maybe have a more "normal" riding style vs. the "showing off" that we all do with a new bike.  Enjoy!

VaEagle,

When you check mileage, fill the tank to the same point each time.

Actually, sounds like your fuel gauge is a whole lot more accurate than the '04's and '05's.

You will find that your mileage will go up, slightly 3-4 mpg's, with the Stage 1.  Out of 3 or 4 103's I ride with the average HWY would be about 40.

We are in the same boat here, no engine mods yet. On our ride yesterday I calculated that we only got 32 mpg, that is consistant with the first 3 tanks we've ridden so far, about 700 since 12-8-05. I'm not worried yet, still too new to be loose. Exhaust and SERT ARE coming.  Dave

Thanks for the replies folks. [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
I figured there were lots of variables to consider, I was just surprised to fill it up so soon. I fugured the 103" with the stock setup would drink more gas. I was just used to my 1997 80" where I was averaging 40mpg with some work on it.
I will keep an eye on it and take your suggestions, thanks. ;D

Got 4000 miles on mine, PCIII USB with a download for an 05 103 with Vance &Hines slipons and Ness Air cleaner. I have Screamin Eagle air cleaner and pipes. Closest I could find.

Best yet has been 33 MPG. Seems to not make a difference whether doin 45-55 in town or 80-90 on the highway. Bout the same either way.

I may have it running too rich in the 25%-50% throttle position. Am going to lean it out a bit and see if the mileage goes up at all.

As for the gas guage, my view is that it is a POS. At 120 miles on the odomoter, it reads 1/2 tank. At 135 miles, the low fuel light is on. I just plan on a stop every 125.  My butt gets sore before my tank goes dry. I'd rather have an oil temp gauge.

My 2002 88" Ultra got between 45-50. I guess it is the cost you pay for a few more ponies and a lot more torque.

We don't get as good of milage in Calif. as the rest of the country due to all the crap they put in our gas out here.

I've noticed in the past that I get better milage a tank or two after I leave the state than I ever do here in Calif.

JC,

It's not just CA anymore, we get that same crap around Chicago.  "Oxygenated" fuel will cost you about 10% in fuel economy.  Watch out for folks adding large percentages of alcohol (you can smell it), alcohol has a higher octane rating but less energy per gallon.  I've noticed lower mileage when using BP-Amoco premium, for instance.

I'm running the SE Air Kit, V&H True Duals/Oval Slip-Ons and the SERT with the 141MP002-A0.MT6 calibration file, got about 8000 miles on the bike.

Pulled down 42mpg a few fill-ups ago, wheelies, burnouts and several WFO launches to 120+mph on that tank, first real tank with the SERT setup.

The best I've been geting with mine is mid 30's with 4000 miles on the clock. Mine is stock except for V&H's slip on's. True duals and SERT coming soon. After coasting into service stations twice I don't trust the gauge anymore, 140 miles on the trip odometer I start looking for gas.   [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif]
