Oil on left muffler
« on: January 09, 2010, 12:25:10 PM »

I have resealed the entire primary side of my 103 and I still find oil burnt on to the left muffler. There is no sign of leakage on the ground. Anyone got any ideas of what to look for? Did forget to mention the dealer doesn't have a clue?

Where do you find it on the left muffler?  Top, Bottom, inside, outside??

It's mostly on the bottom but als on the side. It never exceeds about 4" back from the muffler clamp.

Are you running the same fluid in all 3 holes? See this thread - Shifter Shaft Seal Leak for discussion on that particular problem. If you were running different fluids in each hole it might be easier to determine what fluid is leaking. :nixweiss:

I'm running Mobil 1 in all the holes. I can't find anything wet under the bike so I'm thinking it might be from a pressurized area.

Yeah, I had that seal go on my last scoot.

PIA to replace, but if there are no other visual leaks.......this is probable the culprit.

That's what I was thinking also... lot easier to know for sure when running different fluids but with the location the original poster is describing I'm thinking that seal is the culprit. :nixweiss:

The color of the fluid would be a great help if Shockproof was used in the tranny (pink) vs brown in the primary.

In saying that, don't forget the starter jackshaft seal on the inside of the primary OR the starter jackshaft coupler on 06 and older bikes (with a starter jackshaft).  Primary oil can weep out the jackshaft to starter coupler on to the drive belt if the starter jackshaft bolt washer/seal is torn.

You can always dye the oil, that is what we did with the CAT tractors that ran similar colored oils.

Do you find any oil under the bike when it sits after a ride? Any wet spots on the bottom of the trans pan, or back side of the primary?

Run your finger along the top of the "dogbone" frame brace under the trans.  The shift shaft seal, if it has a small leak, will allow some trans fluid to leak and blow back onto the brace and the left pipe, without actually dripping on the floor.  I speak from experience.  You mentioned resealing the entire primary side of the bike.  What seals were replaced, and what brand of seals/gaskets did you use?  Replacing the stock Harley shift shaft seal with another stock seal is a waste of time and money, go with the double lip seal from Cometic.  I've heard that H-D recently changed to a double lip seal as well, but I can't confirm that.  All I can confirm is that the original seal was a total POS.

Sure would be nice if this could be replaced without pulling the entire primary, but unfortunately it can't.  So it makes sense to use the best possible seals next time so you don't have to keep taking it apart.

I haven't checked where you suggested and I will. As for the seal I stopped using the Harley dealer several years ago and use an independent shop called Crank N Chrome in Holly Hill, FL. I'll call him and see if he used the double lip seal. One person thinks it could be the fuel overflow blowing back on dry oil residue and dissolving it and it blows back on the muffler. I am going to check what you suggested as soon as the temp gets over 50. If it's in the 20's in Florida I bet it's cold in Indiana.

Thanks for your help.

One other source you might check rather easily.  Take a hard look at your rear shock absorber for leaks.   A few yrs ago,  I had one go bad on a R.K. and it leaked down onto the muffler.   Got it replaced under warranty.

I have new Progressive shocks but thanks just the same. I really have to believe it is a very small leak and the airflow is just making it spray on the muffler.

Thanks

Exactly, now you just need to find the spot with the road grime and you have found your problem.
