Hawaiian roads and rides
« on: January 10, 2010, 02:37:01 AM »

This is a question for our Hawaiian residents and riders.
Our son is going to Hawaii for his honeymoon in April. He heard about some road (Maui maybe) that has 50+ single lane bridges and a whole bunch of turns riding through the mountains and rain forest.

Anyone with real knowledge of the rides? Motorcycle rentals in the area?

That's the road to the little town of Hana.   He can also ride about 10,000 feet up (can't remember actually the elevation) to Haleakala crater.  The Harley dealer is also an Audi dealer near the airport (at least it was in 2004) and I believe they rent.  Also several rental places on the island that rents exotic cars and Harley's (around the islland)..

All of the above is for Maui.

Have you been there Bob? Some of the stuff I saw on the net showed less then ideal roads for motorcycle travel.

Rent your bikes thru HOG if their a member, much cheaper.
The Road to Hana is 52 miles, 617 curves, 56 bridges, and takes 3 hours (one way).
We did it last in 2008. Going up to the crater is a lot of fun too.
Riding the other islands are nice, but nothing like Maui!

Road to Hana is an all day trip.  Start early - took us from about 8 am until dark by car.  You go through a rain forest (it is wet) so we decided the car would be more fun (we had a convertible).  Hana is worth the trip - cool village & may stay there next trip some.

Road up the mountain - Haleakela - is by far the best biking road on the island that we found.  We took the bike up & the views are GREAT.  Went through some clouds & got a little wet.  At the top it can be cold even in the middle of the day.  Great views from the top!  Wailea side of the mountain is a Maui Winery & a good burger joint across the road -  they are in all the tourist info you get for Maui.  Road through there was fun.

Second most fun road we found was the road south of Wailea than ran through a big lava field.  Not too twisty but enough & a lot of "Up & down" mini roller coastering.

Some of the roads on Maui are 1 lane especially around the northern part of the island.  Not recommended for bikes - some of these were not in great shape when we were there in 2004.  Falling rocks, etc. & VERY narrow in places.
