Need Some Advice
« on: January 11, 2006, 08:45:12 PM »

After much agonizing I put some money down on a new Autumn Haze with a March or April delivery date.

there's no site like this, for people with a "standard ultra". get the SE, it's just the right thing to do.

If you were to build up and Ultra to the equivalent of a SEUC there is no way you would have money left over. You would probably spent more. Now having said that if the features that come on the SEUC are not important to you and you would not put them on a standard than go for it. Keep in mind also that the resale value of the SE bikes seems to hold pretty strong. with add ons on a standard you'll be lucky to get 50 cents on the dollar for them and the bike will depreciate much quicker.

If you get the SE bike you won't be disapointed! If it were up to me there would be no second thought.

Dakotazeb,
I would think it would be safe to say that the majority of CVO owners are glad (even with all the quirks that are wrong with these bikes) that they purchased a CVO. You have awhile to wait for yours to come in, and hopefully some of the issues may have been corrected by then. Also remember that what you are adding to a stock "Ultra" are all accessories, and I believe the ball park formula for resale on accessories added is about twenty percent. When you start with a CVO you have a "limited edition" (even though it has been hard for us to figure out how limited since MoCo doesn't get specific for how many they produce) motorcycle and they are easier to sell if you ever decide to get rid of it. Bottom line, the decision is yours, you have to do what will make you (and Momma) happy. Good luck. BTW waiting and anticipating is good, makes you enjoy it more when you get it. ;) That is what the wife tells me anyway.

I beg to differ, Sir.  I'm people with a "standard ultra."  A "standard ultra", with a BIG A$$ED MOTOR!  [smiley=huepfenlol2.gif] Get what you want, my brother!  [smiley=xyxthumbs.gif] It is cvoharley.com.  However, it is not a requirement to own a CVO, to be a Member.  Whichever Model you decide to buy, you are WELCOME here!  Later--HUBBARD

Probably the best argument for buying a CVO bike over a standard model is resale value. Yes, some of the CVO's drop but nowhere near compared to what you lose when you build up a standard model to the level of a CVO. Basically most dealers do not even allow for all the add ons when you trade and the average on the private sale market is 10 cents on the dollar for all of those goodies. So if you sink an additional 10k into a standard model you can maybe get MSRP plus a grand two years down the road, meaning your 30k Ultra would sell for 21k meanwhile the 32k CVO SEUC will probably hold at about 28k for some time. Some models have gone for more on the used market than new. Lots of variables, but the bottom line is CVO dollars are better spent. One last point H-D credit will not loan more than 120% of the base price of any vehicle meaning if you get a standard UC up to 32K you can only borrow 24K. With tax, title, doc fees, shipping, set-up and Extended warranty, you'd be looking at putting about 15k down to swing that deal. On the SEUC, you'd only have to go about Like any business deal, the devil is in the details.

Adios

Having owned both - a "standard" Ultra which I modified to the tune of $000's and the SE Ultra I can tell you hands down the SE CVO Ultra wins.  It is an AWESOME bike and I thank my lucky stars and the mrs. every day that I got it.

Well I did this dance back in 2004 (well 2003 actually) when the SE Glide came out, put $1K down on a Blue/Black and was waiting about a month, got lucky and walked into a dealer that just had a guy take back his deposit on one.  The 103 was still fairly new at that time and couldn't really find anyone with real mileage on one to prove longevity.  Christmas night I decided to dump the SE and pick up a regular Ultra Classic, bought it the next morning.  Loved the bike, no doubt about it, put 29,000 miles on it while I had it.  When the Blue/Black SE came into the dealer (the one I'd gotten my deposit back on) I nearly dropped to my knees when I saw it, I'd been kicking myself ever since.  Nearly bought a couple '05 SE Glides but me and the rip off artist......uhhh dealer couldn't come to terms (Mike's Famous Bikes), they don't understand that a guy ready to write a check for a $30,000 bike doesn't play thier f@#$*n games.  When I saw the SE Ultra I KNEW I had to have it, all the luxuries of the Ultra that I'm use to (CB, Intercom....) and a now fairly proven 103" motor.  Dealer up the road had the Black/Green in stock and nobody had even asked about putting a deposit down, but the other 2 colors were already spoken for (oh as of the other day, they still haven't gotten the other colors in).  Told em to get it out of the crate and I'd be there in 20 minutes.  Took one look at it, had em add a 6sp and the BlueTooth interface, a week later I picked it up.  That was 8000 miles ago, I couldn't be happier with a bike.  The difference between the SE and the regular Ultra is huge, yeah the chrome is nice, but if you like a little power, or being able to pass without downshifting, or just running down the interstate at 100mph with half the throttle left, the SE is the only way to go.  Yeah you can add the 103" to the regular Ultra, but all you have is an Ultra with a bigger motor, no more resale for the added coin you put in it.

Thanks guys.  You can stop the posts.  Guess I just needed a reality check.  I've wanted the SE since August and to settle for anything less at this point just doesn't make sense.  I'd be just like FR8TRN and be kicking myself later.  Between FR8TRN and ezrider4, you have told me exactly what I needed to hear.

Thanks again everyone.  Can't wait to get on that SE Haze this spring and go crusin'.

Dakotazeb,

Fr8's right, we won't stop posting and you will want the SEUC.

I ordered my Haze back in August, and I am still waiting.  I have waivered (very slightly) a few times, but I always come back.

Fr8 also posted here recently about how his stock SEUC pulled away from a regular Ultra while running 2-up, uphill, against a guy who was a regular on that hill.

If you are going to be doing more touring with your wife, then there is no other option than the SEUC.

One of the main reasons I am holding out is because I know I would always wonder about what coulda shoulda been and I would always have regrets if I went with a regular Ultra.

When I started shopping for a Harley, I didn't know about the SE's.  When I learned about them. I decided to hold out until I could get the SE.

Dakotazeb, I have to throw my 2 cents in here because I have gone through the same thought process.  Last July, I decided it was time for a new Ultra. My big concern was recreating the bike I currently had ( E-Glide w/106 motor). So I started figuring how much I would need to get the bike where I wanted it, and it didn't take long to get close to 30K. Then I saw a SEU on the web site, and suddenly, 32K didn't seem so bad. Since I've had my deposit down for going on 6 months, I've had lots of opportunity to second guess my decision, but as someone that I respect said, " you can buy a 20K bike, spend 10K and still have a 20K bike, or you can buy a 30K bike, and still have a 30K bike."  That ended the lesson for me.  LOL  I just wish my 30K bike would get here!
