Taxing the wacky tobaccy........
« on: January 12, 2010, 04:29:43 PM »

Today's headline news in Calif:

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- A state Assembly committee has approved a bill to tax and regulate marijuana in California.

The California State Assembly Health Committee will hear the bill next. However, the bill won't be moved out of the Assembly by the Friday deadline.

The bill authored by Democratic Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, D-San Francisco.

Ammiano will re-introduce a similar or identical bill on Jan. 23.

California marijuana advocates praised the results of the 4 to 3 vote by the committee Tuesday.

"Making marijuana legal has now entered the public dialogue in a credible way. Decades of wasteful, punitive, racist marijuana policy have taken quite a toll in this country. The Public Safety Committee has demonstrated that serious people take ending marijuana prohibition seriously."

"The mere fact that there was a vote in the Assembly to regulate and control the sale and distribution of marijuana would have been unthinkable even one year ago. And if the bill isn't fully enacted into law this year, it will be soon," Tom Angell with Law Enforcement Against Prohibition said in a statement.

If approved, pot would be regulated in a way similar to alcohol.

How can they tax homegrown?  I suppose they can do it like alcohol, make it a crime to grow your own.

I do not how how Ca. can tax something that is still illegal at the federal level.  I see a few legal battles.

pretty sure the federal gobment pass a law allowing each state do there own thing. Its all at a state level now.  :2vrolijk_21: None of the feds business the way it should be! Free at last free at last! well not exactly there will be tax! You will probably be able to grow a small amount at home just as you can brew your own beer or make wine. Now if you want to sell it then the gobmint will want there tax. This law just sets the stage for the legal sale in stores that will probably be licker stores. Just my guess.  :nixweiss: :nixweiss:

It should be done on a Federal level and taxed like alcohol. All having it illegal has done is make criminals out of regular people, make millions in illegal $$$ for drug dealers and foreign nations, not raise a dime toward our economy (even though it's the largest cash crop in CA), cost us billions fighting to stop it (with little to no effect), and cost an unmeasurable loss of time and effort in fighting REAL crimes and terrorism! That's without even saying what growing Hemp might do to help us too! Bout time the Feds get a f*cking clue too!!! ;)

And while we're at it...........might as well legalize prostitution and tax it too (like they do in Nevada). :2vrolijk_21:  There goes the huge deficit problem. :)

Home brewed isn't illegal as long as the quantities are small and you don't try to sell it.  You can give it away all day long, though.
