Installing CB radio on a 2009 SERG
« on: January 15, 2010, 07:52:55 AM »

Getting ready to install a CB radio on my 2009 SERG. I spent about an hour at the service department yesterday going over details getting ready to make this happen.  I have a few questions for anyone who's already done this mod to a SERG.

1. Regarding the tank console:  Is it possible to purchase/install the tank console insert used on a CVO Ultra Classic..?  The srvc guy showed me that one of the insert pieces "is" available while the adhesive decorative piece is protected... Options..?

2. If not, what console insert can be used that still keeps the bike looking like a cvo and not a stock RG..?  Or... am I better off remoting the actual headset connector piece under the tank/seat etc..?

3. What will this little mod cost (ball park) at the dealor..?

4.  Got any pics..?  Lemme see.

I tried the same thing and the dealer yes no way on the insert. Even though you have a screaming eagle it was not part of the origanal bike so HD denied it. I just bought the console and left it. why not it's CHROME. If someone else has any other ideas I please share them.

If you want to retain your CVO tank consoles, consider the Boom Audio Music Intercom Kit, HD p/n 77108-09.  It allows insallation of the HD CB without disturbing the tank console to accommodate the rider headset connection.  With the kit, the rider headset connector sits on the tank just forward of the seat.  The tank shouldn't be damaged because the connector sits on thick double-sided tape and is secured with a small metal clip.

I installed the BAMI kit on my '04 EG and included pictures of the install in this thread:

http://www.cvoharley.com/smf/index.php?topic=42830.0

The BAMI kit/CB installation on your bikes should be, essentially, a plug and play proposition.  My installation was more complicated because of the difference in handlebar switch connectors  ('04 uses Deutsch/'07 and newer use Molex), difference in interconnect harnesses (pre-'06 Harmon Kardon era), etc.

You will need the BAMI kit, non-Ultra overlay harness (p/n 70169-06), and CB module.  You will also need a CB antenna.  I used J&M's in-fairing CB antenna mentioned in the thread.

You can visit HD's website and see the installation instructions and kit contents where the BAMI kit is shown.

HTH.

I've have the complete installation and the tank console insert is not difficult to resolve if you know someone with a Screamin Eagle Ultra.   H-D will sell an insert to your friend because he can provide the VIN.   Although restricted, this is not the type of part that requires the owner to send back their original part.  The p/n I used is 77168-08 and it costs is about $15.  I had my insert painted in the titanium color to break-up the monochromatic silver seen by the rider.

You will have two other problems to contend with: PTT switch on the left handlebar and antenna mount.

PTT is a very real and very expensive problem because H-D only offers a handlebar replacement in a black housing, and it is made for external wiring.   It should be possible to remove the vinyl jacket and connector housing to run the wires inside the handlebar, but you still need to buy chrome housings and transplant the switches.   Be aware that the volume control switch that comes on your SERG is centered in the chrome handlebar housing, the CB style is offset to allow room for both the volume and PTT switches, and there is a different mounting/retaining bracket for dual switches.  It's putzy work.

H-D's frame mount CB antenna will disappoint you because it does not mirror the location or angle of the am/fm antenna, and interferes with the fender filler panel (requiring an access hole).   All this work and it looks like you got it from JC Whitney, not H-D.   I purchased another H-D am/fm (chrome) antenna bracket reversed it, drilled and tapped a hole and have a very decent solution.   Send me your email, I'll see what I can do to reply with a picture.

I admire your interest in CB, it is great to be able to talk with your biker buddies.

Hobbes3, thanks for the information.  I got a call earlier this week from the service dept letting me know that their ready to order all the needed parts. They didn't explain the issues with the ptt switch housing.  I thought that was going to be converted to chrome and look as factory as the SE Ultra.

I'll have to recheck that.  I've also heard that there are some folks who've done the 'inside the fairing' cb antenna mount with decent results.  You loose some range but it does work well when riding in smaller groups. That would resolve the unsightly external antenna mount issue.

I'm PM'ing you my email addy, thanks for offering to assist.

BTW, last week I wound up adding a FLHTK (Ultra Limited) to the fleet...  the CB issue is resolved for the time being...  However I'm still moving forward and adding the CB to the SERG and the wife's SG.

When you get into the details of ordering parts, you will find that H-D does not assign a part number to the left-hand CVO handlebar assembly, it is all a collection of individual piece parts.  That is one reason why it is so expensive (because you are paying a technician by the hour to figure out what is needed).  The other reason is worse; H-D chose to eliminate the PTT switch on the SERG even though they could have used the existing SE Ultra switch assembly.

I tried two different powered AM/FM antennas inside my fairing, neither was effective.  My best guess is that the metallic paint blocks the radio signal.   It will not surprise me if one of your biker buddies has good results with in internal CB antenna, only to find it does not work well on your bike.
