Tour Pack Hinges
« on: January 24, 2010, 05:47:35 PM »

I've seen on the site where people have upgraded the UGLY factory provided tour pack hinges.  One camp has gone with a custom made billet style shown on the right in the picture below and others have gone with the HD chrome hinge shown on the left in the picture below.

Does anyone have any pros and/or cons to which hinge is a better choice or is there really any significant advantage of one over the other?? :confused5: :confused5:

I've had them both and installed them both.  I bought the MOCO's for the current bike because they looked good and were about 1/2 the cost.

2Lane was gracious enough for a group buy on the aftermarket billet hinges and this man was the only maker at the time.  Now you have choices.

They both installed easily and worked and looked great.  I would go with either of them again but for cost, I would get the MOCO's..

I am very happy with HD's, I don't think I'm being bias but by the look of them side by side I think HD's are better looking !

Different stokes for different folks!

However, seeing that you're asking... I purchased the billet hinges through the group buy long before the MoCo came out with their version and I'm glad I did!

I like the look of them a whole lot better - They're slimmer and feel a lot more solid, more weight to them.  It maybe just me, but whenever I see the ones from H-D on a bike I think the guy must have installed them upside down.

I sold another few sets to friends and they love them too!

The HD's also match the latch's on the other side of the TP in the size and shape.

I have installed both, I have the ones from DickP on the Grey Ghost.
Here's what I see comparing the two. The HD ones are stamped metal, made in china. they have an offset bracket change.
the ones from Dick are solid metal CNC'd and chromed and made right here in the USA.
my choice, you can guess.

Check your screws in the group buy hinges.  My friend just found his lid falling off because several screws were missing.  Then he tried to screw back in the ones that he found, and he stripped the threads.  Anyway, after riding like this, the hinges were beyond saving, but he did like them enough to order another set directly.

I agree, stop buying the crap from China, support your local machine shop, you will get a better product and help a small US company stay in bussines, get them from Dick.

I have the HD hinges, like the look, and the finish. So far they work fine, (no loose screws etc..) My only concern is the tour pak lid now pivots away from the tour pak body when you open it. Result is the lid is 3/4 of an inch away from the base, each time you open you pull on the wires for lights and lock solenoid. I am worried it will stress the wires and cause a failure.

he probably didnt open the holes up, stripping them out happens if you dont drill the holes bigger. i have installed many sets of the ones from Dick(group buy) and they are better made than the HD ones. and be sure to add some locktite to them
