Over 30 years ago Toyota implemented a program called total quality management (google TQM, many books written on it).  Basically this is a program that has become the benchmark for product quality in manufacturing.  This program was actually invented by an American (I forget his name) and tried to pitch it to car companies in the US, but they were not interested.  He took this program to Japan and Toyota jumped all over it.  Presently, so many of the parts are subcontracted to other firms that TQM is not as valad as it once was.  I have many friends that work in a Toyota plant in Indiana that have said their cost cutting in recent years have significantly sacrificed quality.  As for domestic producers I am sure the big 3 picked up on the TQM model in recent years.  This is taught in business school programs as the standard for quality control, so newer executives would be on board with it.

I have 3 Dodges, a 2005 Durango with 75K on it that has had only regular maintenance and 1 set of tires.  Other than that it has never seen the shop.  I just recently sold my 1997 Dodge minivan with 230k and it served me well.  I just bought a new Dodge Dakota and it appears to be well made so far.  I have had many GMs as well with very good results.  At this point, buy domestic or foreign, as far as quality goes I don't think it matters.  I am however a very proud American, so that's where I spend my $$$.  For now, while we are still in a free country everyone can buy whatever makes them happy.

if you were a supplier for Mercedes-Benz, even the tools you were obliged to use were designed, delivered and owned by Mercedes-Benz, suppliers were subject to unannounced inspections by Mercedes-Benz, some had the "pleasure" on a weekly basis - at least this was the case some years ago. I doubt this has changed. And the Japanese manufacturers used to be even worse. No chance to put the blame on a supplier ...

Kraut you are 100% correct, I do business with Mercedes as well as many Japanese companies.  They do have the tools built and you are to use them.  We are having one Japanese company in next Thursday for a review of tooling and shipping containers that they also supply.

Whew, this chit is really getting deep now.  I heard some of the conservative talking heads on the radio saying that the government is really coming down hard on Toyota since they (the government) is in bed with GM, Chrsyler and the auto workers union.  Lord, lord it never ends.

I grew up in Oshawa, big GM plant.  I have seen the cars and formerly trucks coming out of there get top quality awards and I like the vehicles... but the media and Edmonds rips them apart.  I have a Pontiac G5 right now as a comuter car... 45 K on it and nothing more than oil changes.  My neighbours bought a Civic at the same time, paid more... its up for sale it was a lemon, but the Honda dealers say there is nothing wrong with it.... new tranny, new CPU, thank god its under warranty.  thats not to say GM does not build crap, I had a montana van that only had 8K on it, and GM bought it back from me because it would cut out for no reason on the road... very bad

I am happy that the playing field is being leveled... I bet many at Toyota wished they had stayed under the radar as number 2 :D

BTW
On other news topics, did you guys hear about the Two American Airline pilots that overflew Vegas by 200 miles today?  Oh they were not in a 737. they were in a Camery that would not slow down HEHE

Well, he did get a $700 ticket for going 105 MPH in his Prius.  :o :D
http://www.ecorazzi.com/2007/08/21/steve-wozniak-receives-700-ticket-for-105mph-in-a-prius/

Between the stuck gas pedal and bad breaks he had to go that fast, you would think they would let him off.

According to Japan’s Nikkei News, Toyota will recall 270,000 of its 2010 Prius models due to an issue with the car’s braking system. Unrelated to past Toyota recalls, the Prius uses a unique combination of traditional mechanical braking and sophisticated regenerative braking, which is used to recharge the car’s hybrid battery.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) as well as Japanese authorities have registered over 100 complaints about the car’s brake system, where owners say they experienced a brief loss of braking capability when traveling over bumpy or icy roads. Toyota has admitted it knew of a problem that caused a brief loss of braking during the transition from the car’s regenerative braking to its traditional friction braking. Toyota refers to this as “slight unresponsiveness” and says it usually lasts less than a second.

Toyota has said the issue has been solved on all models produced since late January but no recall has been ordered for models built before that time.

Toyota spokesman Tom Hanson has said he has no information regarding the recall of the Prius model. Earlier today the Japanese automaker released a statement saying that it, “is aware that NHTSA has opened a Preliminary Evaluation centered on owner complaints of a braking issue with the 2010 model year Prius. Toyota will cooperate fully with NHTSA’s investigation.”

I believe you are 100% correct, the shame is too much for them to endure

Another recall of Toyotas coming... this has to do with leaky power steering on 4 cyl models... 400,000 odd cars effected, already lots of complaints and a couple of deaths

I see GM, Ford and Chrysler have had no recalls this month... lets hope they stay under the radar a little longer.
